The CW’s DC Comics shared television universe grew this year with the addition of Legends of Tomorrow and the news that Supergirl would be moving to the network, joining CW superhero vets Arrow and The Flash. The season 1 finale of Legends of Tomorrow effectively wrapped up the year’s arc and teased what’s to come in season 2 with the arrival of Rex Tyler a.k.a. Hourman (Patrick J. Adams) introducing the existence of the Justice Society of America.

Prior to the beginning of production on season 2, casting announcements included Nick Zano as Nick Heywood a.k.a. Citizen Steel and Maisie Richardson-Sellers as a new take on Vixen. Now, during the show’s panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego, more heroes and TV’s first team of super-villains were revealed to be joining Legends of Tomorrow season 2.

WB TV made the official announcement that JSA members joining the cast are Dr. Mid-Nite, Stargirl, and Obsidian, though the roles have yet to be cast; all three characters from the DC Comics have appeared as members of the JSA throughout their history. Although it’s unclear which version of Dr. Mid-Nite the show plans to adapt, the other heroes’ alter-egos – Courtney Whitmore as Stargirl and Todd Rice as Obsidian – will likely make the jump from comic to screen.

As for the villains heading to Legends of Tomorrow, it was announced the series will be assembling TV’s first team of super-villains: the Legion of Doom. Making up the Legion will be characters recognizable to fans of  The CW’s DC universe, including Arrow’s Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) and Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) as well as The Flash’s Reverse-Flash (Matt Letscher) and Leonard Snart a.k.a. Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller).

Previous deals struck with both Barrowman and Miller established the actors as series regulars under the Warner Bros. TV banner – meaning they could appear on any of the four DC Comics shows – allowing for their appearances in Legends of Tomorrow season 2. As for, Letscher and McDonough, both were announced to be made series regulars for only Legends – which makes sense considering the present-day version of Darhk was defeated in the Arrow season 4 finale and the storyline of Reverse-Flash was brought full circle in season 2 of The Flash.

Speaking about the Legion of Doom, Legends of Tomorrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim said:

“For season two of Legends, we decided that the perfect antagonist for TV’s first-ever team of Super Heroes would be TV’s first-ever team of Super-Villains, recruited from the ranks of Arrow and The Flash’s deadliest adversaries. Being huge fans of the Challenge of the Superfriends, we’ve come to call this group our ‘Legion of Doom.’”

While fans of the DC Comics will likely be excited to see Dr. Mid-Nite, Stargirl, and Obsidian appear in Legends of Tomorrow season 2, we still have very little to go on in terms of their characters, their costumes, and how they will fit in with the Waverider team. Certainly, there is room on the Time Master ship because Captain Cold has switched back to the side of evil (though, technically he’s not back since it’s a different version of the character who sacrificed himself for his fellow Legends) and Hawkman (Falk Hentschel) and Hawkgirl (Ciara Renée) have left the team. Still, without much information about these characters, it’s unclear what to expect from their arrival – but, we should know more soon enough.

As for the villains, it seems Legends of Tomorrow is continuing the trend of adopting characters from their fellow CW series with the addition of Merlyn, Reverse-Flash, and Darhk – though Darhk did make an appearance in Legends of Tomorrow season 1 when the team traveled to the 1970s. Additionally, it’s likely that the mystery actor in Guggenheim’s recent tweet of the premiere episode table read is one of these characters (with the best guess perhaps being Letscher). These pieces of information seem to indicate that although there may be a slow reveal of the villain in season 2, the characters who inevitably form the Legion of Doom may begin to appear in the Legends of Tomorrow second season premiere episode.
