Legends of Tomorrow will find a familiar replacement for Firestorm next year. Over it’s three seasons, The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow has seen its fair share of DC heroes come and go. But perhaps the most emotional exit was the loss of Professor Martin Stein (Victor Garber), who became a casualty of war with Earth-X Nazis in this year’s ‘Crisis on Earth-X’ crossover. This has led to the overall loss of Firestorm as part of the Legends, and fans were keen to know who – if anyone – would take their place. Following the midseason finale, executive producer Marc Guggenheim has confirmed that they will be replaced by someone familiar to Legends of Tomorrow fans.

Founding members of the Legends have left for various reasons over the course of its run. Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) left his captaincy to Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) in order to assemble the Time Bureau. Hawk Girl (Ciara Renée) left with her destined partner after Vandal Savage was despatched. And Leonard Snart (Wentworth Miller) sacrificed himself to save the team. The latest departure came when Stein was caught in the crossfire during ‘Crisis on Earth-X’, and succumbed to his injuries. His Firestorm-partner Jefferson Jackson (Franz Drameh) was devastated and no longer able to transform, which led to his decision to leave the team prior to the midseason break. With the flame-headed nuclear man no longer around, it seemingly left a vacancy in the Waverider.

But whilst talking to Comic Book, Guggenheim stated that there was most definitely a plan in place to replace Firestorm and his seat in the Legends. Speaking about the next half of season 3, Guggenheim said:

“We do have a plan for how to replace Firestorm on the bridge, and it’s a really cool one. It’s one we’re really excited about. There’s really like two empty chairs on the Waverider. So we do have a game plan. We’ve always had a game plan. I just can’t talk about the game plan. The CW publicity will determine when we get to unleash that bit of news… It’s a returning… It’s a previously established character from the Arrowverse.”

He wouldn’t be drawn on the identity of the new member, but there are already plenty of theories. The alternative Earth version of Leo Snart would be a prime candidate, but Miller has already said that he’s leaving the Arrowverse soon. The Ray (Russell Tovey) has also been ruled out, due to his commitment to other shows, including ABC’s Quantico. But John Constantine will be boarding the Waverider for a few episodes and could feasibly stick around for a while.

A popular online rumor is that Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) may be joining the team at some point. Of course, there are plenty of other characters who could become a Legend just as easily. A returning Hawkgirl or Jonah Hex, are just two others that come to mind as well. With literally multiple worlds and timeframes to choose from, it could be anyone from dozens of different characters seen in any of The CW shows, including ‘villains’.

The time-jumping and irreverent nature of Legends has made it one of the most fun parts of the Arrowverse, and hopefully this will be continued with the addition of the new team member, whoever it turns out to be. We look forward to being surprised – and hopefully pleased – when the show returns in 2018.
