LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is one of the most popular LEGO video games that the toy company has ever produced. Inspired partially by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as the extensive source material which introduced this fantastical world, the game boasts a huge array of intriguing and beautifully designed characters.

With so many of Earth’s mightiest heroes to choose from, new players will surely want to make the most of what’s on offer. There are some great tips, therefore, on how to unlock different characters, make the most of their powers, or perhaps even utilize the Free Play options with some of these famous foes and vigilantes.

10 Honorable Mention: Collecting Studs

Sometimes a character can’t simply be unlocked through the normal gameplay modes. They might be found in a race, or maybe through significant Free Play missions. Regardless, players should be keen to collect up as many studs as possible and not use them straight away.

As more characters become available, it will be far easier to waste studs all at once. That’s why it’s important to especially collect studs throughout the initial Story Mode gameplay. This kind of rule applies to unlocking characters in LEGO other games, as well, like in the DC Comics game.

9 Unlocking Hulk Buster

The Hulk Buster armor is just one reason why this is one of the best LEGO games, considering the Marvel team managed to pull in multiple different armors from across comic book and film history. Players can have a blast with this suit, but it’s a little difficult to find.

It’s part of Iron Man’s attire and players will have to complete the Anger Management chapter of the Story Mode before gaining access. From there, the character option will only actually pop up in the main menu once Tony Stark is chosen, meaning he’s not an initial option in the character selection.

8 The Season Pass

The Season Pass is such a crucial piece of the game and something that all fans should definitely purchase if they want to unlock many of the Marvel characters who were released as DLC. It’s actually cheaper to get the Season Pass at this stage of the game’s release, rather than buy all the DLCs individually.

Amongst these packs are characters inspired by MCU TV shows like Quake, as well as other packs influenced by the comic books, such as the Masters Of Evil. It’s definitely wise to check out some of Marvel’s modern titles so that fans can fully appreciate the depth of the roster in these DLC options.

7 Replaying Missions

Beginners might not realize that it’s actually important to replay through the Story Mode using Free Play. However, it might not always be Free Play that’s actually the key. Players should make sure to test out every room and try to solve every puzzle with the initial set of characters available.

There are actually lots of characters to unlock in this way before complicating the process with a variety of other figures. Of course, if in doubt, the title will actually give players hints at certain moments as to which LEGO movie franchise characters should be called upon.

6 Testing Out Abilities

One of the reasons that Marvel’s Avengers is improving is because they are diversifying the roster and the powers available to players. The original LEGO title did this much earlier, but fans didn’t always manage to utilize all of their abilities in the midst of the action.

Sometimes it’s important to test out the abilities of a character before diving into the Story Mode. It’s therefore recommended that players have fun messing around with some of the options and puzzles in the homeworld map, without the pressures of the campaign itself. This way, they can find out what the characters have to offer in regards to their abilities.

5 Alternative Suits

It’s actually not well known that some of the characters within LEGO Marvel’s Avengers actually have multiple suits to play around with. The Hulk Buster armor is a bonus piece of gear that drastically changes how Iron Man plays, but other costume changes for characters are more cosmetic in nature.

These costumes won’t appear as separate characters, but will come up as a costume change on the main character menu. Beginners should look out for these, therefore, as although some costumes have to be purchased, more often than not, they are a bit hidden on that menu.

4 First Appearances

There have, of course, been other LEGO games inthis series, some of which fans might have previously played. However, it’s important to note that many of the characters in this game are actually making their first appearance. This means that the game plays differently from others.

Thor Girl, the Young Avengers, Ultron, Bactroc, and even Agent 13 all make their first appearances, alongside plenty of others. Some of the new characters might be directly from the MCU itself, which is why they haven’t been previously seen in the video games.

3 Comic Book Runs To Know The Characters

As previously mentioned, there’s some great comic book runs for fans to get to know some of the newer characters in the games. For those that want to be immersed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are, of course, some of the spin-off titles available, which recap the films and add additional material.

However, based upon the inclusion of other characters from the comics, fans may want to read the Avengers Initiative, Avengers Academy, Young Avengers, and Thunderbolts books, to understand some of these playable heroes and villains a lot better, as well as their powers and roles in the story.

2 No Team-Ups

Plenty of the best superhero video games, from Arkham to the web-head franchises, have managed to create compelling gameplay without allowing for team-up mechanics, despite boasting a few other heroes. This is a major difference compared to Marvel games fans are familiar with, like Ultimate Alliance or Marvel Vs. Capcom.

Despite the huge roster of characters, beginners should note that the game does not actually have any team-up mechanics. When building a team for a level, therefore, the player should choose characters useful for a mission, rather than trying to get team unity, such as within the Young Avengers or Iron Man family.

1 Era Of The Game

The game was initially released in 2016, meaning that the roster of available characters does not reflect some of the more modern releases in the MCU. Although there were DLC updates for releases like Ant-Man And The Wasp, beginners should know that not all of the modern MCU content is available.

This means that Black Panther and Wakanda are not featured as reflected in the MCU and characters like Captain America are in their classic form (i.e. Steve Rogers) rather than their modern incarnation (i.e. the Disney+ Sam Wilson). But that doesn’t mean that fans can’t have lots of fun with these slightly older takes, even if the color and wackiness Thor: Ragnarok doesn’t have the impact players might hope for.
