LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga can give Finn and Poe the love they deserve, fixing one of the sequel trilogy’s biggest mistakes. Finn and Poe are only two of the many playable characters in LEGO Skywalker Saga, but in terms of the main cast from the nine main films, the duo was often left with the short end of the stick. While both characters are set up well in The Force Awakens, hinting at interesting plotlines and relationships, the next two films sidelined the characters in order to spend more time with Rey and Kylo Ren, along with the many legacy characters from the original Star Wars trilogy that were reintroduced throughout the three films. Because of this, and potentially other outside factors, Finn and Poe had several set-ups that frustratingly went nowhere, including a potential romance.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Not only should LEGO Skywalker Saga can give the sequel trilogy’s two underserved characters the romance they deserved. After Star Wars: The Force Awakens released in 2015, many viewers noted an undeniable chemistry between the former stormtrooper, Finn, and ace pilot Poe Dameron. The two meet early in the film when Finn betrays the First Order and breaks the captured Poe out of captivity. The two immediately hit it off (with Poe even giving Finn his name). While Poe is presumed dead for much of the film’s story after a ship crash, the two are later reunited, with many of their interactions (including Poe’s exaggerated lip bite) seemingly hinting at a romance down the line.

While a romance sadly never happened in the films, LEGO Skywalker Saga, which feels like a movie, helps bring some hope to shippers of Finn and Poe (who affectionately refer to a potential romance between them as FinnPoe). When players first boot up the main menu for LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, they see Rey standing on Ahch-To, as other main characters fade in around her. When Finn first appears, he is in Rose Tico’s arms, but immediately jumps out of them to run and embrace Poe. After holding each other for a few moments, Finn is attacked and knocked down, but Poe valiantly defends him before picking him back up off the ground and returning him to his embrace. This exchange feels like a pretty concrete nod to the relationship many fans wanted, and should, ideally, be the first step toward making it fully canon.

Why LEGO Star Wars: Skywalker Saga’s Finn & Poe Depiction Matters

While players sadly won’t be able to connect Finn and Poe up online thanks to LEGO Skywalker Saga‘s missing online co-op, the game could still provide FinnPoe fans with some important validation on their relationship. If Finn and Poe had been given a romantic relationship in the sequel trilogy, it would have been an important milestone for the Star Wars franchise as its first on-screen gay relationship. While The Force Awakens also heavily hinted at a romance between Finn and Rey, the chemistry between John Boyega (Finn) and Oscar Isaac (Poe) seemingly indicated that there was hope for Star Wars‘ first major LGBTQ relationship. Unfortunately, Finn’s potential romances with both Poe and Rey were dropped in the sequels.

While the LEGO Skywalker Saga has its problems, acknowledging FinnPoe is seemingly not among them. Even the actors themselves spoke out in support of the relationship, voicing their hopes to see it play out on-screen. However, the latter two films seemed to ignore their wishes – as well as that of many fans – by introducing new characters for Finn and Poe (Rose Tico and Zorri Bliss) to have romantic tension with. These romances also failed to pan out, leaving FinnPoe shippers feeling frustrated. By seemingly supporting the FinnPoe relationship, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is taking an important step that the films failed to do, and finally doing right by Finn and Poe.
