Liev Schreiber says he’s done with Ray Donovan after the movie — for now. The actor first starred as the titular fixer in the Showtime series, which began in 2013 and broke viewership records as the premium cable network’s most-watched premiere in its history. Other than Ray Donovan’s professional antics, which include cleaning up crime scenes, arranging bribes, and carrying out other illegal affairs for high-paying clientele, the series focuses on the main character’s relationships with his family, including his brothers Terry (Eddie Marsan), Bunchy (Dash Mihok), and Daryll (Pooch Hall), as well as his father Mickey (Jon Voight).

After 7 successful seasons on Showtime, Ray Donovan was shockingly axed by the network without even giving showrunner David Hollander prior notice. Hollander was already in the process of writing an eighth and final season at the time. In wake of the show’s cancelation, its devoted fanbase began petitioning for Showtime to bring back the series for another season and allow it to have a proper sendoff. Instead, the network greenlit a movie written and directed by Hollander and featuring the return of much of the original Ray Donovan cast: Schreiber, Marsan, Mihok, Hall, Voight, and Kerris Dorsey as Ray’s daughter, Bridget.

In an interview with TVLine ahead of its premiere, Schreiber hinted he may be done with Ray Donovan after the movie, although there is a caveat. The actor has heard the rumors that the movie could be a springboard for a potential franchise, as teased by Showtime CEO, David Nevins. So Schreiber specifies, this is only the end “for now.” His full quote reads, “I’ve heard David say that. This is the end for me. For now.

Schreiber was one of many who was hurt and confused by Showtime’s sudden cancelation of Ray Donovan. Though he’s still not clear on why the network made the decision, Schreiber has a sense it was due to a merger involving Showtime’s parent company, ViacomCBS. Regardless of the reason, Schreiber and company are just happy to be back and gifted the opportunity to cap off the series with a feature-length film.

The movie picks up directly in the fallout of the Ray Donovan season 7 finale as Mickey is on the run, and Ray is determined to track him down before he can wreak any more havoc. The film’s script is co-written by Schreiber, so hopefully it can provide a satisfying conclusion for the popular series that experienced an abrupt cancelation two years ago. Ray Donovan: The Movie airs tonight, January 14, on Showtime.
