Brittany Dodd continues to share her troubled relationship with her mother, Cynthia, in season four of Life After Lockup. In an exclusive clip of Friday’s episode, Brittany’s mom explains the “triggers” that led to her drug relapse.

Since she first appeared on Love After Lockup season two, Brittany has remained transparent about her scarred past. The show began following her story after her release from completing a second prison bid. After striking up a romance with Marcelino Santiago through a penpal program, the couple moved fast in getting married and starting a family together once she was a free woman. However, despite her happy home life, Brittany still struggles with pain from her rough childhood. At age 12, she ran away from home, and by 15 she had given birth to two children she was forced to give up for adoption due to her drug use at the time. She was first incarcerated at age 18 and returned to prison a few years after her first release. Now, with her life changing for the better, Brittany continues to try and build a relationship with her mother, who is still struggling with addiction issues.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In an exclusive clip of Friday’s episode, Brittany let the cameras in as she met with her mother for the first time since distancing herself last season. “My mother’s appearance is shocking,” she told producers. “She is literally like 40 pounds lighter than the last time that I saw her.” Fans are then reminded about the troubled state Cynthia was in when Brittany and her sister last saw her. At the time, her mother was in bad shape and became emotional after being confronted about her addiction by her daughters. “The only time I’ve been able to do that in such a short period of time is when I was on drugs,” Brittany shared while addressing her mother’s thinner appearance. “Just to know that this is where my mom is at right now is just heartbreaking,” she added. “Honestly, I know it might not look like it right now, but I am getting better,” Cynthia told Brittany. But after Brittany asked her mom what “getting better” means, Cynthia seemingly became defensive. “It means I’m focusing on issues and what triggers me, I guess,” she replied. “Am I your trigger,” Brittany asked her mom, which she quickly denied before begging her daughter for help. “Then help me,” Cynthia pleads after Brittany threatens to distance herself again. “Help me because I feel all alone. And I feel like nobody cares. Nobody wants to help me,” Cynthia says with tears in her eyes.

The emotional encounter is just one of many the mother and daughter have shared on camera. Brittany continues to be a fan-favorite on the series for how open and honest she is about addiction. Fans can catch more of the emotional conversation on Friday’s episode of Life After Lockup.
