The director of the A24 film, The Lighthouse, is making a new movie called The Northman, which just got its 2022 release date. The Lighthouse was a critical darling when it debuted in 2019 and was commended for its bold storytelling and strong cinematography. The film starred Robert Pattinson and Willen Dafoe, who both gave award-worthy performances as their characters struggled to battle loneliness at sea. The director, Robert Eggers, was even nominated for Best Director at the Independent Spirit Awards. While not commercially successful, The Lighthouse was well-liked by many film enthusiasts.

Now, Eggers is moving on to a new movie called The Northman, which has now been given a 2022 release date. Focus Features has just announced that The Northman will head to theaters on Friday, April 8, 2022. The film is described as, “an epic revenge thriller that explores how far a Viking prince will go to seek justice for his murdered father.” Eggers will also co-write the screenplay along with Icelandic poet and novelist, Sjón. The Producers are Lars Knudsen, Mark Huffam, and New Regency. The Northman will be a co-production between New Regency and Focus Features, who also produced The Lighthouse.

The movie has a huge cast full of talented actors. Alexander Skarsgard, Nicole Kidman, Björk, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Anya Taylor-Joy are all set to be in the film. Given Eggers’ track record for pulling great performances out of his actors, it is hard to see how he won’t do the same with this new cast. With this amount of award-winning talent, The Northman could become an awards contender for next year’s Oscar season.
