Encanto songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda has disclosed what the extended version of the final song, “All of You,” entailed before being edited. Miranda found fame with his hit Broadway musical, Hamilton, in 2015. The musical detailing aspects of the founding father’s life became such a large hit that it was later released as a movie on Disney+. His musical and acting talents have landed him roles in TV series such as His Dark Materials, but he seems to have found a niche in Disney movies over the last few years.

Miranda’s Disney credits include his role as Jack in Mary Poppins Returns and even as a soldier in The Rise of Skywalker. However, his songwriting skills are possibly the biggest contribution to his work with Disney. Most of the catchy tunes in Moana were penned by Miranda and now he has replicated his lyrical success in Encanto. The movie’s soundtrack hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart earlier this month. But as in most films, some of the songs had to undergo heavy editing to fit the demands of the director. “All of You” was no exception.

Encanto‘s final song details the Madrigal family’s hopes and reconciliation following the destruction of their home, their miracle. Arguably one of the most emotionally moving moments in the movie, the song explains that the miracle is found in each member of the family and not the magical candle. During an Encanto watch party earlier this week, Miranda explained that the original song contained quite a bit more detail. Read below to see how some of the lyrics were altered for the final cut.

Miranda’s social media posts revealed that “All of You” was written to be seven minutes long. Unfortunately, he was informed that the animators at Disney couldn’t accommodate for such a prolonged time and it had to be cut short. Thanks to his post, Encanto fans are able to get a more in-depth look into the meaning of some of the film’s lines. Agustin originally explained how his daughter took after his wife. Abuela also revealed her misguided motives in a public confession, explaining the symbolism of the candle and her darkness.

While the song generally does include allusions to most of Miranda’s original lyrics, there are some assumptions that have to be made. It would have been nice if the lines had been included to gain better insight but it is easy to see why such a long scene would have been a little overkill. The animation process is extremely time-consuming and the overall feelings were still able to be conveyed in the theatrical product. Ultimately, the details weren’t a necessity, which is evident by the fact that many moviegoers were still left teary-eyed after Encanto’s final musical number.
