Alucard is finally set to hit the big screen in a live-action Hellsing movie – here’s everything we know about the anime adaptation so far. The Hellsing manga was created by Kouta Hirano and follows the titular organization, which was founded by Dracula’s Van Helsing. The Hellsing Organization itself protects Britain from vampire attacks, with its key weapon being Alucard, the original vampire. Alucard was actually Count Dracula once upon a time and is something of a mix between a vampire and nightmarish Lovecraftian beast.

Hellsing was first adapted into an anime series in the early 2000s, which received somewhat lukewarm notices. The later OVA series Hellsing Ultimate ran for ten episodes, and in addition to sticking much closer to the source material, it greatly dialed up the bloodshed and style. Hellsing has a significant cult following thanks to its outlandish action, expansive lore and a roster of memorable characters, including Seras Victoria, Integra Hellsing and Alucard’s priest nemesis Alexander Anderson.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In 2021 it was confirmed that a live-action movie of Hellsing was in development, but what can fans of the series expect from the film?

John Wick Creator Derek Kolstad Is Penning Hellsing

Deadline reported in March 2021 that John Wick screenwriter Derek Kolstad will be penning the Hellsing movie for Amazon Studios and that he was a fan of the source material before signing on. Kolstad – who most recently penned Nobody – said of writing the movie that “Ever since my brother introduced me to the Hellsing manga and anime some years ago, I’ve been obsessed with adapting it.”

Kolstad is kind of the perfect choice to take on Hellsing, with Wick also centered around a borderline unkillable assassin who has a memorable supporting cast of characters. It’s still early for the project, however, so no director or cast have been announced. Reeves is probably too obvious a pick for Alucard, but he’d also be kind of perfect, while fans have suggested everyone from Predators Adrian Brody to Tom Hiddleston.

The Hellsing Movie’s Release Date & Story Are Unknown

It’s so early in the process for the Hellsing live-action movie that no release date or story details have been revealed. It’s safe to assume the movie is still at least a couple of years away. The movie version will likely take inspiration from the early Hellsing mangas and the Ultimate OVAs, including Alucard’s training of Seras, his battle with Anderson and possibly even the storming of the Hellsing compound by the Valentine brothers.

Hellsing Could Become A New Franchise

Amazon is no doubt hoping the Hellsing movie will inspire a franchise, and there’s plenty of source material to draw from. In fact, given how crazy the story gets in later chapters, it would be easy to see how one could evolve naturally. Hopefully, the movie will be able to avoid the lackluster critical receptions that greeted the likes of Netflix’s Death Note, but Hellsing certainly has the potential to evolve into the horror version of John Wick.
