New behind-the-scenes photos of The Little Mermaidshow a glimpse of Halle Bailey as Ariel. Bailey is a Grammy-nominated singer who is one half of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle. The 21-year-old singer/actress is also currently starring in the teen sitcom Grown-ish.  In 2019, Bailey was tapped to lead the cast of Disney’s live-action remake of the 1989 animated classic. The upcoming film will serve as her big-screen debut.

The Little Mermaid also stars Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric. Awkwafina, Daveed Diggs, and Jacob Tremblay complete the cast as Ariel’s loveable animal friends Scuttle, Sebastian, and Flounder. The movie is directed by Rob Marshall with music by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Filming began in 2020 but was heavily delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Aside from their studio location in England, the cast also spent a summer in Sardinia, Italy to film additional scenes. Early this year, set photos of Bailey showed the actress in some of Ariel’s iconic costumes. As of July, the highly anticipated movie has wrapped up filming. It is expected to hit theaters in May 2023.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

With more than a year away before The Little Mermaid’s much-awaited release, Bailey gave fans a new look at her character with some never-before-seen BTS pictures. The actress took to Instagram to wrap up her remarkable year and shared photos of her most unforgettable moments while filming The Little Mermaid. The first photo showed the movie’s script, which was blurred to avoid spoilers, but still showed her character name “Ariel” in bold print. One photo showed her enjoying a swim in Sardinia’s pristine waters, while another gave a peek into the tedious process of movie-making using CGI. “A glimpse of my 2021. A year I will never forget…from living overseas to coming home and still getting to do what I’ve always dreamed of,” Bailey wrote in the caption. Check out her post below:

Bailey’s casting as the beloved Disney princess was not without controversy. Coming from the successes of Lily James’ Cinderella and Emma Watsons’ Beauty and the Beast, many fans questioned whether Bailey would be perfect for the role of Ariel. So far, the young star has been getting nothing but praise from her co-stars who all say that she’s a superstar in the making. Bailey also performed at Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary last October, covering a Lion King song and proving to naysayers that she has the vocal chops to sing The Little Mermaid’s classic tunes.

Indeed, Bailey truly had a busy and unforgettable year. It is only a precursor to what is to come as The Little Mermaid nears its premiere date. Currently, Bailey’s complete transformation as Ariel is still a well-guarded secret and it will be interesting to see how the actress will breathe life into the popular cartoon princess. With her talent, dedication, and Disney’s magic in creating blockbusters, there is no doubt that the new live-action remake will be a treat for audiences of all ages.
