Warning! Major spoilers for Locke & Key.

After watching the season one finale of Locke & Keyfans have a lot of questions on their minds. Perhaps top of the list is: what happened to Ellie Whedon, and can she return in season two?

Locke & Key follows the Locke siblings attempting to pick up the pieces after their dad’s murder. Their mom picks up the family to move them back to their dad’s ancestral home, Keyhouse. The Lockes find a series of magical keys with mysterious powers hidden around the house that are tied to their late father’s past. But it turns out the most important connection to their father’s past isn’t a key at all, but Ellie Whedon.

Ellie is the only surviving member of Rendell’s high school friend group, the self-anointed Keepers of the Keys. Ellie provided a lot of narrative context for the audience about the power of the keys. That knowledge eventually worked against her when, due to a case of mistaken identity by means of the Identity Key, The Lockes toss Ellie through the mysterious Black Door, thinking she was Dodge (AKA Lucas). The door was shut before Ellie’s fate was revealed.

How Can Ellie Return in Season Two?

The simple fact that Ellie never got a death scene is too important to overlook. Without that definitive death scene, Locke & Key is clearly keeping the door open for her return. Showrunner Carlton Cuse flat out said that season 2 of Locke & Key will explore what happens when one goes through the void.

And, because of that, Ellie is too important to omit from a potential season two of Locke & Key. It’s safe to assume audiences will see her again, perhaps in the context of a rescue mission to bring her back from the other side. Her disappearance will be the metaphorical key to learning what really happens behind the Black Door.

The Black Door is opened with the Omega Key, which appears to be the most powerful key in all of Keyhouse. Every other key’s power is plainly laid out, but not the Omega Key. All that’s known about the Omega Key is that it can open the Black Door, which is the portal to another, seemingly demonic, world. Lucas spends the entirety of season one of Locke & Key in search of the Omega Key. He was possessed by an element from inside the Black Door, which likely means he has some knowledge of the other side. Ellie does now too, and she recently pledged allegiance to the Lockes’ cause. Finding a way to bring Ellie back from the other side will likely be an important plot point in Locke & Key season two, because it will be the only way to defeat Lucas.
