Loki Dances Down Joker’s Iconic Steps in Perfect Mashup Poster

The worlds of Marvel’s Lokiand DC’s Joker have collided, with the God of Mischief getting his groove on in a new mash-up poster. Inspired by Norse mythology, the infamous trickster was introduced to Marvel Comics in 1962’s Journey Into Mystery #85. Developed by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby, Loki has since become one of the more storied and iconic foes of Thor and The Avengers. Played by Tom Hiddleston, the character has achieved similar in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having appeared in several movies. Loki’s journey has been expanded all the more courtesy of a solo Disney+ series — pitting him against the enchanting Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) and the bureaucratic Time Variance Authority.

Across the aisle, few DC villains could be deemed as iconic as The Joker. Created by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson, the Clown Prince of Crime debuted in 1940’s Batman #1. He has recurred consistently throughout subsequent decades to torment The Caped Crusader and the wider Bat-Family. The Joker has been embodied by multiple actors on screens big and small, including Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, and Cameron Monaghan. In 2019, Joaquin Phoenix joined the pantheon via the Todd Phillips-directed movie, playing a new Joker iteration named Arthur Fleck and earning an Academy Award.

A new fan-made poster by Samuel Cheve has now merged elements from the two disparate agents of chaos. Characterized as much by bouts of rhythm as his murderous outbursts, Phoenix’s Joker came fully into his own during a dance sequence down a set of city steps. The iconic scene has since been recreated by countless fans and prompted even more artwork. The latest piece reimagined Loki in The Joker’s place. Similarly posed in a musical stance atop the steps, Loki instead wore a customarily green suit. In one hand, he clutched a “Vote for Loki” badge that appeared in satirical, four-part comic storyline in 2016. In the other, the Tesseract that Loki stole from under The Avengers’ noses. The piece couldn’t have been more perfectly timed. After all, in Loki season 1, episode 3, “Lamentis”, the God of Mischief engaged in his own musical interlude. The episode saw him and Sylvie traveling to the Ark, a vessel that could power the TemPad or otherwise facilitate their escape from the doomed moon. After enjoying a short nap, Sylvie awoke to Loki singing a song in the Asgardian language. In the process, he briefly guided the train’s crew and other passengers in singing and dancing along. The moment emphasized Loki rediscovering his mischievous side after a rocky few episodes of painful revelations. Equally, it made the idea of Loki celebrating a successful scheme by dancing down some steps not quite so outlandish.

It was also announced in May that work was underway on Joker 2, with Phillips returning to write the script. Given the early stages of the project, details have remained understandably scarced as to what the sequel could entail. Regardless, barring a huge retcon, there’ll no doubt be plenty of dancing on Joker’s part. Furthermore, the recent months saw a lot of chatter regarding a merging of the DC and Marvel worlds. Along with reports that Disney tried to buy the DCEU-owning Warner Bros, director James Gunn spoke to both DC and Marvel execs about potential crossovers. Whether such collaborations will ever come to frution shall remain extremely unlikely, though never say never. Whatever the case, there will always be such artwork as the above Loki and Joker piece to somewhat scratch that particular itch.
