Loki director Kate Herron hopes future MCU stories surrounding the God of Mischief will explore his bisexuality. The MCU’s track record with LGBTQ+ representation has been rather spotty up to this point. After infamously cutting scenes that hinted at certain characters’ sexualities in Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther, 2019 epic Avengers: Endgame made headlines by introducing the franchise’s first gay character. However, the backlash was also swift, since the person in question was a quick cameo from director Joe Russo. Fans have long called for better depictions of LGBTQ+ characters.

That is why Loki‘s third episode stirred up so much excitement online. In a quiet heart-to-heart with Variant Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), Loki (Tom Hiddleston) coyly confirmed he is bisexual by saying he’s had dalliances with both men and women. Herron later added a confirmation of her own on social media, writing it was always her intention to have the series address Loki’s bisexuality. Endgame cameo aside, Loki has now become the MCU’s first LGBTQ+ character.

Herron recently touched upon Loki’s newly-revealed sexuality while speaking to Collider. It remains to be seen if the series will explore it any further in its remaining two episodes, but Herron is hopeful for the future beyond the show. When it comes to where the MCU will take Loki in the future, the director said this:

I don’t know plans for the future with Loki — I’m so focused on this story. But I would say that part of my thinking was, well, if it’s canon and it’s acknowledged, then yeah I hope there’s obviously more road to travel with that aspect of his personality. And I hope it has opened the door to more stories, definitely.

Though many fans have picked up on some flirty energy between Loki and Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson), the series doesn’t yet appear to be steering them in a romantic direction. Instead, Loki episode 4 strongly hinted the trickster has developed feelings for Sylvie. That may yet prove to be a red herring, but there is definitely more that can be done with Loki’s bisexuality. By pushing for this reveal, Herron has paved the way for deeper exploration in the future. One just has to hope Marvel will take this opportunity.

As for where said exploration can happen, a potential Loki season 2 would be the perfect place. Marvel has yet to confirm there is more on the way, but producer Nate Moore did acknowledge Loki is one of the best candidates for a sophomore run. Additionally, there have been behind the scenes hints that further episodes have been put into development. Until Loki season 2 is confirmed, it is best to approach the idea of it with some caution. There are also additional movies where he could pop up, though Hiddleston has already said Loki won’t be in Thor 4. Herron is hopeful the journey will continue, and it’s safe to say a lot of fans are too.
