Warning: SPOILERS for Loki episode 2, “The Variant”.

Loki (Tom Hiddleston) revealed his hilariously perfect revenge on Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) in episode 2 but it’s doubtful the God of Mischief will ever be able to get his payback on the green goliath. Loki signed on to help Agent Mobius M. Mobius and the Time Variance Authority catch a Loki variant (Sophia Di Martino) creating havoc throughout the Sacred Timeline, but the Asgardian trickster god let slip that the Hulk is still on his mind.

Since this is the Loki who fought the Avengers in 2012 and then escaped S.H.I.E.L.D. custody with the Tesseract, the events of the Battle of New York were only a few days ago at most and still fresh in Loki’s memory. Easily one of the funniest and most memorable moments of The Avengers was Loki trying to intimidate the Hulk, who grabbed him and ragdoll smashed him all over the ground before calling him a “puny god” in disgust. Loki was not just physically incapacitated and taken out of the fight entirely, he was also completely humiliated. No one, not even his brother Thor (Chris Hemsworth), had ever abused him like that. Frankly, it put the fear of Hulk in Loki, although the God of Mischief won’t readily admit it.

The Hulk was still clearly on Loki’s mind when he realized that the other Loki, whom the TVA calls the Zero Variant, is hiding in apocalypses throughout the Sacred Timeline. When Loki interrupted Mobius’ lunch to explain his theory, he shanghaied the TVA analyst’s salad to visualize a metaphor for his revelation, and Loki’s explanation included a not-so-subtle idea for what he wanted to do to the Hulk: “I could, let’s say, push the Hulk off the Rainbow Bridge.” It’s perfect revenge because it’s sneaky in a Loki-like way, and since Hulk can’t fly, he’d just fall for eternity and die in space. While Loki’s idea was just an offhand comment, it’s also telling that he brought up the Hulk at all. It indicates that the gamma-powered behemoth lives rent-free in Loki’s mind. Along with his scheme to meet the Time-Keepers face-to-face so he can overthrow them and rule the TVA, Loki is obviously musing scenarios where gets vengeance on the Hulk for humiliating him.

Of course, fans know from Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War that Loki never gets any kind of comeuppance on Hulk. Loki was, in fact, still terrified of the Hulk in Ragnarok when he was revealed to be the Grandmaster’s (Jeff Goldblum) champion on Sakaar. The Grandmaster, who was unaware of Loki’s history with the Hulk, was confused when Thor smashed his champion and Loki jumped to his feet and yelled, “Yes! That’s how it feels!” But Loki still kept his distance from Hulk and even Bruce Banner throughout the rest of Thor: Ragnarok. If Loki could have pushed the Hulk off the Rainbow Bridge, he would have manufactured an opportunity during the Revengers’ battle against Hela (Cate Blanchett), but by that point, that version of Loki was at his most heroic helping Thor against Hela and Surtur (Clancy Brown).

However, Loki‘s version of the God of Mischief will never have those experiences and he already read about them or watched them in the TVA’s Time Theater. So, will Loki ever get his revenge on the Hulk? The exact scenario Loki described to Mobius of pushing Hulk off the Rainbow Bridge is off the table since the Rainbow Bridge (and Asgard) no longer exist. It seems extremely far-fetched for Loki to go to the trouble of using the TVA’s time technology to carry out that exact revenge on the Hulk, not to mention Loki doing so would likely cause a Nexus event. The Hulk will be part of Disney+’s She-Hulk show and it’s not clear, and possibly even unlikely, that Loki will run into the Hulk again in MCU Phase 4. For now, Loki will just have to be satisfied by fantasizing about ways to get even with the Incredible Hulk,
