Star Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s recent tease that Loki season 2 will feature a darker story for Ravonna Renslayer indicates that the character will indeed have a strong connection to Kang The Conqueror, as it has been theorized. One of the two MCU shows on Disney+ to get a second season so far, Loki saw the MCU’s most beloved villain placed in a multiverse of variants and alternate timelines in a series that blended the well-known mystical elements of the character with a sci-fi touch. In addition to Ravonna Renslayer, the series also introduced other new characters like Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) and Mobius (Owen Wilson) and set up what might be the MCU’s most powerful villain yet.

The mystery surrounding the TVA and whoever was behind the all-powerful entity made Loki into a very different series from what audiences expected from the God of Mischief. At the end of season 1, all that mystery culminated in the revelation of He Who Remains as the real force responsible for the TVA. The character, played by Jonathan Majors, was introduced as one of the infinite variants of Kang The Conqueror, one of the most important villains in the Marvel comics universe and a welcome addition to the MCU. While the character’s presence in Loki was short-lived, Majors will return to the role of Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Kang’s importance not only to Loki but to the MCU as a whole is evident with the confirmation that the second season of the God of Mischief series will delve deeper into the character of Ravonna Renslayer’s. In the comics, Renslayer has a long history with Kang The Conqueror that goes back to 1963. Throughout Loki’s first season, those familiar with Renslayer’s background in the comics believed that the character was aware of Kang’s existence and plans. However, Loki‘s season finale revealed that the character was also being tricked by the real TVA creator. With Kang now properly introduced and Renslayer’s story heading to a darker side, Loki‘s second season will have the chance to work on the relationship between the two characters.

Although not part of the 616-universe, Ravonna Renslayer became close to Kang when the latter invaded the Realm of Carellius in the 40th century seeking to expand his domain across time and space. Although the character initially denied the villain’s affection, Renslayer eventually sacrificed herself to save Kang because she believed he could change. Renslayer would spend the next few years on a sort of life-supporting time-tube created by another version of Kang as a way to delay the eventual death of his beloved. This tragic backstory is just one part of Renslayer’s journey in the comics and reveals just how deep the MCU can dive into the character.

The history between Ravonna Renslayer and Kang The Conqueror has the potential to be one of the most interesting parts of Loki‘s season 2. With the already confirmed presence of yet another variant of Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the connections between the Disney+ series and the MCU films growing stronger and stronger, Loki has become an essential watch. Whenever it comes back for season two, Loki will have to live up to expectations not only for Renslayr’s story but for all the plotlines that have been set up.
