Marvel debuts the first footage for Loki season 2 at the D23 Expo. Last year, Tom Hiddleston returned to play his fan favorite character Loki in his first-ever solo project, a Disney+ streaming series set after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The first season found Loki running afoul of the Time Variance Authority, an organization tasked with maintaining the proper flow of time. The stinger for Loki season 1 confirmed it would receive a second season, making it the first live-action Marvel Disney+ show to extend beyond a miniseries.
At the end of Loki season 1, the trickster found himself in a new universe after his variant Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) killed the mysterious He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), the creator and keeper of the TVA. His death allowed a variant of his, the infamous Kang the Conqueror, to take over the multiverse. With the MCU now in the midst of its Multiverse Saga, it’s assumed that Loki season 2 will be a pivotal piece of its overall storytelling.
At this year’s D23 Expo, Hiddleston and the cast of Loki appeared onstage to hype the upcoming episodes. The first footage was screened for attendees, and Screen Rant was on hand to provide a full description. Loki is first shown creeping up behind someone, who flips through a book. Before he gets there, though, he’s sent elsewhere. Loki says he is being “pulled through time. And I saw terrible, awful things.” He opens a portal of sorts to see Kang’s face carved in the wall behind a hologram. Eugene Cordero’s Casey looks like he is in a random prison, or is a captive of sorts. Owen Wilson, as Mobius M. Mobius, is shown in both fancy suits and an astronaut suit. The tag is Loki listing off everyone who has called him a villain after Mobius asks, “Who said you were?”
On paper, it sounds like Loki season 2 will deliver on the multiverse excitement initially promised by this year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With Loki now fully stranded amid newly branching timelines, he’ll be hurtling through a variety of universes as he tries to right what was broken. This should provide the show with plenty of opportunities to explore fun, surprising corners of the Marvel universe. Kang the Conqueror appears to be the big bad of Loki season 2; with the movie Avengers: The Kang Dynasty set for 2025, Marvel is now laying the groundwork for his villainous reign. Whether Loki himself will come face to face with Kang remains to be seen, but it would be exciting if the MCU’s first major villain got the chance to square off against its latest antagonist.
With Loki season 2 not slated to debut until summer 2023, it will unfortunately be some time before Marvel makes this footage available to the public. Most likely, it won’t arrive until after the February debut of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which is another project with Kang at its center. Nevertheless, there are enough intriguing clues in this Loki season 2 footage description to keep speculation rampant. A few things seem certain at this point: The excellent Loki and Mobius dynamic will continue in season 2, the multiverse will pose quite a danger to the characters, and things are only going to get more exciting from here.
