When Scarlet Witch cast an inversion spell that turned Marvel’s greatest heroes into villains, and the most sinister bad guys into good guys, Loki would wield Mjolnir and fight his brother. In an epic battle, Loki managed to grab Thor’s trusted hammer and beat him with it, as the God of Thunder became unworthy following the spell.

Marvel’s Axis event flipped the publisher’s entire universe on its head, as the Red Skull created a concentration camp on Genosha’s to eliminate Mutants. In the story by Rick Remender, Jim Cheung, Terry Dodson, Leinil Francis Yu, Adam Kubert, Mark Morales, Dave Meikis, Guillermo Ortega, Mark Roslan, Rachel Dodson, Paul Mounts, and Chris Eliopulos, the villain would become Red Onslaught after obtaining a piece of Charles Xavier’s mind. In order to reverse the powers Red Onslaught acquired, Scarlet Witch (and Doctor Doom) cast an inversion spell that worked in stopped the Red Skull, but inadvertedly turned Marvel heroes and villains in the same radius into their opposites.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As Captain America battled his fellow heroes on Earth, Loki lured Thor to the blue area of the Moon in an effort to stop him from causing more destruction – as he knows he will kill innocent lives if he returns to Genosha. On the Moon, Loki is chased by Thor, who yells at his brother that “death is coming.” While running from Thor, Loki encounters Mjolnir and realizes if he can’t pick up the hammer he’ll die. As an enraged Thor tracks down Loki and tells him that both he and his parents “never loved” him, the trickster god smashes him with Mjolnir in a surprise attack.

Loki boasts that Thor is the real failure for once and asks him “how does it feel to know I am more worthy than you?!” As he’s about to hit his brother with Mjolnir again, Scarlet Witch and Doctor Doom’s reversal spell comes into effect as the hammer falls to the ground. Loki pleads with Thor he was the God of Thunder and that he must remember. Unfortunately, Thor doesn’t believe him and calls him a liar.

Wielding Mjolnir allowed Loki – even temporarily – to believe that he belonged and reversed the roles between himself and Thor. Even if it was because of a spell, for a brief time, Loki was worthy, while Thor was not. Sadly, the God of Thunder had no desire to believe Loki’s claim he lifted his hammer and was worthy, which makes sense considering how many times he’s been lied to by his brother. Still, for a few moments, Loki was worthy, even if nobody believes him.
