Loki Writer Jokes About Testing Kevin Feige’s Limits With Show’s Storylines

Loki head writer Michael Waldron is testing Kevin Feige’s boundaries for the Disney+ series. Following the introduction of the multiverse in the MCU, Waldron has also written the script for Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Along with rumors of other high-profile MCU and celebrity cameos appearing in the highly anticipated film, many are speculating about the special appearances of the God of Mischief (Tom Hiddleston), Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson), and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino).

Loki was the third installment of the Disney+ live-action Marvel series, delivering as the biggest original series to premiere on the streaming service. Recently, the beloved show earned a Writers Guild of America nomination for outstanding writing in the Drama Series category, competing against Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, HBO’s Succession, Hulu’s The Handmaiden’s Tale, and Showtime’s Yellowjackets. Although the series was met by initial praise as it redefined the franchise, the show was also hit with a philosophical debate on social media due to the controversial kiss shared between Loki and Sylvie on the finale episode.

According to Variety, in a panel discussion hosted by the Royal Television Society, Waldron humorously details how he has been experimenting with Feige’s limits. While discussing various plans for the future of the series, Waldron explains that he had to see how far he could go with the series to “test the fences.” To explain the writing process, he jokingly fashions a scene of Sylvie “soccer kicking an armadillo with a laser mounted on its back.” Read Waldron’s full quote below:

“You’ve got to test the fences…With [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige, you get to see how far you can go,” Waldron explained. “So you write in Sylvie soccer kicking an armadillo with a laser mounted on its back and they tell you ‘OK, that’s too much. I like the mind invasion but maybe pull back on the laser armadillo.’”

Since the dawn of Phase 4 of the MCU, the franchise has been continuously deviating away from its consistent formula, along with recently introducing and expanding into TV-MA programming to create a home for Netflix’s original Marvel shows. Moreover, Feige disclosed that the upcoming Disney+ series Moon Knight, starring Oscar Isaac, will commence a major brutal shift in tonal changes for the MCU. After the premiere of Loki season 1, director Kate Herron announced her exit from the series due to scheduling conflicts. However, Waldron announced that Moon Knight directors, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, are set to join to helm the majority of the episodes for Loki season 2, with fans expecting to see similar darker themes.

With the introduction of the multiverse in the MCU, it appears that the storylines and themes are also steadily expanding along with the franchise. Currently, there is no definitive confirmation in terms of when the God of Mischief will return or further plot details for the sophomore season of Loki. Still, as Waldron is eager to experiment and go beyond Marvel’s tested formula, many can expect to see gradual changes moving forward.
