WARNING: This post contains spoilers for Loki episode 1

Wunmi Mosaku loved that her character from Loki, Hunter B-15, is not from the comics. Riding off the tremendous success of WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki is the third series set in the MCU to air on Disney+. The anticipation for Loki has only been intensified by the more than month-long layoff between Falcon and Winter Soldier‘s finale on April 23 and Loki‘s premiere on June 9.

Now that the first episode of the Tom Hiddleston-led series has premiered, fans are getting a sense of the crazy time-bending adventure that lies ahead for the next six weeks. The first episode of Loki, titled “Glorious Purpose,” flashes back to a familiar scene from Avengers: Endgame in which the mercurial villain escapes S.H.I.E.L.D. custody using the Tesseract. In an alternative timeline, Loki is transported to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia where he is quickly apprehended by the Time Variance Authority. One of the TVA’s highest-ranking hunters, B-15 (played by Wunmi Mosaku), is crucial in detaining Loki and returning him to the TVA headquarters.

Now, in an interview with Screen Rant, Wunmi Mosaku is discussing how she brought her Loki character to life. Since Hunter B-15 does not appear in any Marvel comics, Mosaku felt tremendous freedom when portraying the character because she didn’t feel pressure to meet any fan expectations. Read her full quote below:

It’s a brand new character, so there’s this freedom of doing whatever you want within the confines of the script. She’s written in a way, and then there’s only so much you can do with what’s written in the script. And then it’s finding her physical vocabulary, her vocal energy.

It’s quite refreshing – I say refreshing, but it’s less intimidating, I think – starting from scratch with a new character. Because I think, with Marvel and Marvel fans, people have something in their mind. For any book or any comic, you have something in your mind and someone in your mind, and it’s quite nice not having to have that pressure of, “You should be like this.” Instead, it’s just like, “No, this is who she is. This is it. You get what you’re given.”

Almost every character that plays a prominent role in the MCU is directly lifted from or based on previous Marvel material. With comics dating all the way back to the 1940s, there is plenty of source material for the architects of the MCU to draw from. In the past, the MCU has usually opted to reinvent characters from the comics rather than creating new ones entirely. For instance, Tony Stark had a butler named Jarvis in the comics, but Iron Man substantially revamped the character as the best sidekick Tony could imagine. In later MCU installments, J.A.R.V.I.S. plays an even larger role.

An original character in the MCU is not unprecedented, but it has been a rare occurrence over the years. Hunter B-15 is a prime example of this, who is not based on or even inspired by any specific character in Marvel’s comics. In Loki, Mosaku gets the chance to play the rare original MCU character, and so far, she appears to be making the most of it.
