Gollum is one of the creepiest, craziest, and generally most bizarre characters in the whole of the Lord of the Rings series; other contenders don’t even come close. A Hobbit who was driven mad by the Ring of Power, he lived his life underground, surviving quite well off of fish and the occasional Goblin or Orc. However, his body slowly deteriorated to the point that he became completely unrecognizable as his former self. He would eventually help Frodo and Sam find their way to Mordor (they planned to destroy the Ring – he planned to get it back from them.)

He’s a popular character and, with his almost comical voice and appearance, he’s prime material for memes. Here are ten ridiculously funny memes about Gollum.

10 12 Days Of Christmas

The Twelve Days Of Christmas is a classic holiday song that dates back to the 18th century. The singers count down the gifts given on each day, from “a partridge in a pear tree” to “twelve drummers drumming.”

On the fifth day, the present is “five gold rings” – and considering how crazy Gollum went over just one, it’s frightening to think how obsessive he’d become over five.

9 Give Him A Ring

This meme takes the original scene of Gandalf and Frodo happily chatting and laughing from the opening scene to The Fellowship of the Ring, but the script’s been changed a little bit.

Their original cheery dialogue is replaced with Gandalf telling Frodo a corny joke about giving Gollum a “ring.”

8 Good Guy Gollum

An important point that’s repeated throughout the films it that Bilbo had the choice to kill Gollum but did not, and if Gollum hadn’t survived, the Ring would have never been destroyed.

7 Mount Doom

Gollum is separated from the Ring after Frodo ditches him, but he’s undeterred and follows the hobbit to Mount Doom, where the two engage in a climactic fight – both under the mighty influence of the Ring. Eventually, Gollum gets the Ring, but in his celebration, he trips and falls into Mount Doom, still smiling up at his treasure as he sinks into the fiery void.

In this meme, the replacement of that classic scene with one of Winnie-The-Pooh relaxing in honey is particularly clever and fits the format well.

6 You Actually Like This?

Gollum hates the Elvish lembas bread Frodo and Sam carry as provisions on their quest; considering he’s spent so long dining on fish and Orcs, it’s easy to see why he wouldn’t particularly like the foreign taste.

In fact, Gollum even has a flashback scene where he recalls that, after being cast out by his fellow hobbits for the murder of Deagol, he forgot the taste of bread completely.

5 Johnny Johnny Yes Papa

After the lembas bread – which was basically all the food Frodo and Sam had left – was discovered missing, the blame was immediately placed on Sam, considering that Gollum doesn’t eat it.

When Gollum found crumbs on Sam’s jacket, Frodo was so upset that he completely lost his mind, telling his long-time traveling companion and friend to just “go home.”

4 Why Would Sam Do This

Of course, Sam wasn’t the one responsible for the theft of the lembas bread; it was actually Gollum, who threw the lembas bread off a cliff and then planted the evidence on Sam because he suspected the “stupid, fat Hobbit” of knowing his true intention of taking back the Ring from Frodo.

With Sam gone, he could lead Frodo right into Shelob’s Lair without any suspicion being cast on him.

3 Gollum Impression

Gollum has one of the most memorable voices of any fantasy character in recent history, and you have his talented, prolific voice actor Andy Serkis to thank for that.

A lot of people do impressions of him, and these can range from wildly funny to downright annoying – based on the reaction of his wife, the original poster’s impression definitely seems to lean towards the latter category.

2 The Scroll Of Truth

When Frodo and Sam capture Gollum, they tie him up with Elvish rope that “burns” him, apparently because of some vaguely defined Elvish magic.

But it doesn’t seem logical that it would have that effect on him when it didn’t do anything even remotely similar to Frodo and Sam – all three are hobbits, after all.

1 The Real Gollum

There have been many different screen versions of Gollum throughout the character’s history; of the course the Andy Serkis one is – and most likely always will be – the most memorable, but that’s not to say there haven’t been many others, some of which are definitely interesting enough to be worthy of note.

A few of the character’s various incarnations are shown here; for example, the middle image shows the animated version (voiced by Brother Theodore) from the 1980 Rankin/Bass production The Hobbit.
