The Lord of the Rings series has stood the test of time in many ways, and it will likely always be one of the most beloved fantasy series ever. The story deals mainly with themes of war, loss, nature, and friendship, but there are some romances mentioned in the books and even more so in the movies. However, while people love the canon story, fans also have their favorite fan pairings that they would like to see together either in platonic or more romantic ways.

While ships between two characters are really popular, there are also many polyamorous ships, sometimes called multi-ships, that fans have attached, too. Here are some of the best and most plausible of these based on the character in both the books and the movies.

10 Legolas, Tauriel, and Kili

This triad relationship is on the list because it is an existing love triangle in The Hobbit series. However, since it doesn’t connect well to the book canon and because Tauriel wasn’t a Tolkien character at all, it’s not as popular as some of the other options.

However, since love triangles are a trope that is often played out, it would have been nice to see this end differently or just not include a love triangle at all.

9 Galadriel, Celeborn, Thranduil

Triads, sometimes called OT3s in fan-fic circles, are very popular amongst fans. This relationship includes three of the elven rulers who are left in Middle-Earth at the time of the War of the Ring.

While Galadriel and Celeborn are married, many people like to imagine that many elves would be LGBTQ+ since they live for so long they might be open to different kinds of relationships. While this might not be consistent with Tolkien’s canon about elves, it is fun to think about.

8 Bard, Thranduil, and Thorin

When The Hobbit movies came out, there were many new ships that people started to explore. For monogamous pairings, various combinations of these three became more mainstream such as Thranduil and Thorin or Bard and Thranduil.

However, another option would be to see all three of these men dating each other. Fanfiction allows a place for things to turn out happier than they do in the canon, and this would be a fascinating exploration of the dynamics between elves, humans, and dwarves.

7 Éowyn, Faramir, and Aragorn

While in the canon Aragorn ends up with Arwen and Éowyn ends up with Faramir, there are moments where it seems like Aragorn and Eowyn would be best together. However, with fan fiction, there’s room for more interpretations and more openness when it comes to relationships and sexuality.

With this triad, Éowyn could be at the center and date the two men, or some people would prefer to imagine that all three of them would date each other. There are many different relationship models that are legitimate.

6 Thorin, Bilbo, and Thranduil

This is another trio that would make a lot of sense to many fans. Bilbo and Thorin is also a rather popular ship in the fandom, and many people also love Thranduil and Thorin together. The three certainly have some explosive interactions throughout The Hobbit.

Bard could also be added to the mix making this an OT4. And, once again, some of the relationships could be more romantic while others might be more platonic depending on the scenario and the fan work.

5 Tauriel, Arwen, and Éowyn

While Tauriel is a character that was made up for the movies, these three would make for a great trade between three women. There aren’t nearly enough female characters in the franchise, but it’s not that hard to imagine these three women crossing paths.

Tauriel and Éowyn could relate to both being warriors while Arwen could relate to Tauriel because they are both elven women.

4 Faramir, Éowyn, Aragorn, and Arwen

One of the best possible polyamorous relationships from the series that involves more than just a triad would be between these four. This grouping involves two already established canon couples, and since Aragorn and Éowyn did at one point have strong feelings for each other in various ways, this would be a great solution.

The dynamic of two couples starting to date one another is a fun one that isn’t often explored in fiction and definitely isn’t really explored in a positive way in the media.

3 Arwen, Aragorn, and Eowyn

While the grouping involving Faramir is also a good option, this triad is natural to think about given the setup in the movies. These three are in a bit of a love triangle even though Eowyn is more in love with Aragorn than he is with her.

However, Eowyn and Aragorn are also a good pairing. Either both of these women would date Aragorn or they could all date each other.

2 Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli

Of all the polyamorous ships that fans have thought of, this is one of the most popular. Legolas is often shipped with both Aragorn and Gimli, and all three of these men have strong friendships with one another.

They are always there for each other and support one another, and while these relationships are just as valid if they are platonic, imagining them in a romantic relationship is also beautiful.

1 Frodo, Sam, and Rosie Cotton

Frodo and Sam are one of the most popular fan pairings, and their relationship is central to the story whether you view it as platonic or romantic. Many fans imagine that Sam could be bisexual, and in the books, Sam and Rosie actually come to live with Frodo at Bag End for a time.

It’s easy to imagine Sam being with both Rosie and Frodo as these two relationships are both so important to him. While it might not have happened back in the time when Tolkien wrote the story, modern audiences can interpret things differently.
