A new virtual challenge will give The Lord of the Rings fans the chance to try the journey to Mordor for themselves. Although The Fellowship of the Ring celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, the franchise remains as popular today as ever, and fans will soon return to Middle Earth with Amazon’s prequel series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. While interest — and some trepidation — in the series has only elevated since its announcement, a recent The Rings of Power teaser gave fans their first taste of what to expect.

Set thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings movies, the show will tell the story of a Middle Earth tested by the forging of the infamous rings and the corruption they cause. Known as Middle Earth’s Second Age, it’s a period critical to the story eventually told by Frodo and his Fellowship, with the era marking Dark Lord Sauron’s ascent to power. Despite boasting an ensemble cast pulled from J. R. R. Tolkien’s expansive The Lord of the Rings lore, the show will feature some familiar faces, with Robert Aramayo and Morfydd Clark appearing as young Elrond and Galadriel, respectively.

And after teasing a special event over the last week, The Conqueror has revealed their latest virtual challenge — and it’s a must for The Lord of the Rings fans. Based on the movie series, the challenge tasks players with completing Sam and Frodo’s journey, from The Shire all the way to Mordor, with the mammoth journey split into five separate events. Only entrants that finish each leg are eligible to unlock the next part of the journey, with each leg earning the entrant a real The Lord of the Rings-themed medal mailed to them upon completion. In typical The Conqueror fashion, any and all forms of exercise count toward the target, and entrants can take as long as they need to complete their journey to Mordor. The first medal, based on Bag End, is double-sided, featuring a removable One Ring. Check out the first medal and the accompanying themed app below:

Although The Conqueror team is known for their gorgeous, detailed medals, their first fantasy-themed award outdoes their already excellent selection. The attention to detail on the double-sided medal is incredible, even down to the Middle Earth ribbon allowing fans to display their impressive award. While the medals are clearly the main draw of the challenge, The Conqueror team also either plants a tree or stops ten plastic bottles from entering oceans for every 20% of the journey each entrant completes, meaning The Lord of the Rings‘ dedicated fanbase can do a little bit of good by taking part.

It’s unlikely that any fans who take up the challenge will endure anywhere near the trauma that Frodo and Sam went through to destroy the One Ring, but completing the gargantuan journey — on much nicer terms — is still an impressive feat in itself. The virtual event comes just in time to celebrate the upcoming The Rings of Power, but the show now faces a new challenge of its own. The highly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, has been announced to air a couple of weeks before The Rings of Power arrives, creating fierce competition for the upcoming The Lord of the Rings show.
