Netflix’s sci-fi series picks up one year after Lost in Space season 2’s ending, which left the Robinson family separated. Season 3 begins with the kids establishing a suitable base on a new planet, while the parents from the Resolute attempt to avoid detection from the killed alien robots nearby. However, by the series’ culmination, all of the major protagonists find themselves in a very different situation.

Although the beginning of Lost in Space season 3 deals with the Robinson family attempting to get back together, the back half of the season focuses on how the war with a revived SAR (Scary Alien Robot) can finally end. Where Did Will Robinson & Robot Travel To?

The last shot of the Lost in Space season 3 ending shows Will and Robot on a brand new alien planet. After they played such an important role in stopping SAR’s war, Will took some time to become a better pilot with the hope of going on more adventures with Robot. Maureen and John agree to let Will go on an expedition after Thanksgiving as long as he and Robot are back before Christmas. Penny’s voiceover that plays during this section indicates that Will’s plan might have changed or he already missed his window to attend Christmas on Alpha Centauri. That could be because Will and Robot are busy exploring new planets, such as the one they are shown on at the very end of the series.

The Lost in Space season 3 ending doesn’t provide any additional details on where Will and Robot decided to go. Will mentions before leaving that they won’t leave their current galaxy to reach the mysterious destination, but he wants to keep exploring and isn’t too interested in staying in an established civilization. The quick glimpse at Will and Robot’s destination at the end reveals a mostly water planet. There are mountains in the distance and trees sprouting out from the water. The Robinsons Rebuild Alpha Centauri

While Will and Robot are off exploring new planets, the rest of the Robinson family remains on Alpha Centauri and helps the colony rebuild. It didn’t take long for the colony to become destroyed once the Robinsons arrived. The war against SAR damaged multiple parts of Alpha Centauri, and the Robinsons do what they do best and lend a hand in fixing it. Maureen remarks that they’ll be able to help build a better Alpha Centauri this time around. The responsibilities that come with rebuilding Alpha Centauri are many, but thankfully the Robinsons and the rest of humanity have some extra help. Maureen and Don West (Ignacio Serricchio) are shown in space helping craft a new spaceship to replace the Resolute, and they are aided by several of the robots who turned good in Lost in Space season 3’s ending. Otherwise, John does what he can to help but enjoys the peaceful life, while Judy continues to pursue being a great doctor for everyone on Alpha Centauri.

Why Dr. Smith Confessed For Her Crimes

Dr. Zoe Smith (Parker Posey) was a constant source of chaos throughout Lost in Space, but she finally takes the opportunity to go against her programming by the end of Lost in Space season 3. She not only spared Captain Radic’s life and helped Robot save Will, but Smith formally confessed to her past crimes in the end. This included nearly killing Radic in season 2 and taking the identity of the real Dr. Smith. It was one of the last things she needed to truly atone for her sins and finally serve the time required. Before this happened, though, Smith did one more act of kindness and put her sister on the passenger list for the next trip to Alpha Centauri. It’s the final moment that indicates how much Smith has changed throughout Lost in Space and her path to becoming a good person.

How Robot Saved Will Robinson’s Life (Twice)

Two of the biggest moments in Lost in Space season 3’s ending see Robot save Will’s life twice. The first came when Robot took Will to his home planet to try and convince other robots to fight back against SAR. This was too strenuous on Will’s new artificial heart and would’ve killed him. However, Robot changed his form to fully surround Will – like Groot did in Guardians of the Galaxy – and be a conduit for the approaching lightning storm. This seemingly killed Robot but transferred part of him into Will’s new heart. Will was able to survive thanks to the stronger heart beating inside him, but Robot secretly had another purpose for this. When Will confronted SAR shortly thereafter, the evil robot stabbed him in the heart again. Instead of SAR nearly killing Will again, Robot was able to infiltrate SAR’s programming and take over his body. Robot knew that SAR would attack Will’s heart again since the robot thought this made him their master. So, Robot’s initial sacrifice saved Will’s life and then subsequently prevented SAR from killing him.

What Happened To The Free Robots?

Lost in Space season 3’s ending also included the surprising twist that Will and Robot’s connection from season 1 wasn’t as special as the show’s previous seasons made it seem. Penny led other kids to help robots who were hurt during their crash on Alpha Centauri. It was through these gestures that the robots went against their original programming and became allies to humans. More robots were then freed once SAR was defeated. While some of them stayed on Alpha Centauri to work with humans, several others are shown leaving the planet, including the one Penny freed. It is unknown where these robots are going since their original creators are extinct. Perhaps they are all going off on their own to find new homes or will return to their home planet and start a new civilization there without anyone commanding them.

Is SAR Really Defeated?

The terrifying evil robot SAR returned in Lost in Space season 3 after the other robots uncovered where Maureen and Ben Adler left its body in season 2. The robots used part of its original wiring to put SAR in a new body so he could continue hunting Will Robinson. However, their final confrontation shows Robot getting the upper hand and taking control of SAR’s body. The moment is played as a victory for humanity as Robot seemingly defeats SAR, but is the evil robot really gone? Lost in Space doesn’t take the time to explain exactly how Robot managed to take control of SAR’s body and what happened to its programming. While Robot is indisputably in control by the time the credits roll, there is a chance that the robot’s dormant programming could eventually regain control. The show already had SAR impersonate Robot to try and learn how Will changed Robot, so SAR could do it again in the future and wait for the perfect time to strike if it manages to take control of its body again.

How Lost In Space Sets Up Season 4 (Will It Happen?)

Based on the Lost in Space season 3 ending, there is certainly room for the Robinson family’s story to continue in a fourth season. Will and Robot’s adventures exploring space could easily have them encounter new threats. They could even get stranded in an unknown location, forcing the Robinsons, Don West, and others to go on a rescue mission. Penny even writes “The End of Chapter One” at the end of her book recapping the entire story of Lost in Space, which is a not-so-subtle tease that more adventures are in the future. Unfortunately, there are no plans for the Robinson family’s story to continue. Netflix already confirmed Lost in Space season 3 will be the show’s last, so season 4 isn’t happening right now. Perhaps the streaming service will eventually develop a spinoff or continue the story in another form, but viewers shouldn’t expect to see the Robinsons again anytime soon.
