Lost in Space, Netflix’s popular revival of the classic sci-fi TV series of the same name, has officially finished filming for its third and final season. The company announced production wrapping with behind-the-scenes glimpse at what’s to come in season 3. Lost in Space stars Molly Parker, Toby Stephens, Maxwell Jenkins, Taylor Russell, Mina Sundwall, Ignacio Serricchio, Parker Posey, and Brian Steele. Season 3 is set to premiere on Netflix later this year.

The original Lost in Space series, which aired in the mid-1960s, was a huge hit and maintained a strong pop culture presence long after it finished its run. The show was based on the 1812 novel The Swiss Family Robinson, which told the story of a family shipwrecked and stranded during a voyage at sea. The Netflix series keeps the same basic premise from the original, with the Robinson family now being part of an interstellar colonization effort after Earth is shaken by the impact of a mysterious alien spacecraft.

The third season of Lost in Space, which will also be the series’ last on Netflix, has now officially finished filming. Netflix announced the news on its NXOnNetflix Twitter account with a special behind-the-scenes image of what’s to come. The shot shows Will Robinson sharing a tender moment with the alien robot that becomes his friend and protector over the course of the show. Season 3 should have plenty of secrets in store for both characters and the rest of the cast, as the season 2 finale saw a jump to an unknown sector of space and the discover of the long-lost ship Fortuna.

Throughout its first two seasons, Lost in Space has garnered massive praise for its visual effects. The fantastical world of the cosmic frontier has been brought to life in stunning fashion on the series, and that gorgeous aesthetic and sense of mystique is sure to continue in Lost in Space season 3. In an era full of middling reboots of old properties, the series has found notable success blending the essence of the old with a striking modern vision.

For many fans, three seasons may feel insufficient, but it’s solid run for a Netflix series. The streaming giant has been heavily criticized for cancelling popular shows after two seasons or less – a model which seems to prioritize gaining new subscribers over delivering more content to preexisting fans. Hopefully, Lost in Space is able to satisfyingly tie up its story in season 3, which will arrive for viewing later in 2021.
