More details have surfaced about the new non-Tolkien characters who are being introduced in the upcoming series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The series, which was developed by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay, is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth and based on stories by The Lord of the Rings scribe J.R.R. Tolkien. This makes it a prequel to the events of both The Hobbit and the LotR trilogy. The Rings of Power will be coming to Prime Video on September 2. Although most plot details have not been revealed yet, a teaser is set to premiere on Super Bowl Sunday.

Included among the series’ massive cast are Morfydd Clark as young Galadriel and Robert Aramayo as young Elrond. Sauron will also be appearing in the series, though it is not currently known in what capacity. The eight-episode season 1 was directed by Wayne Che Yip, Charlotte Brändström, and J. A. Bayona, whose most recent work was another huge blockbuster franchise project: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Today, Vanity Fair ran an article taking a closer look into The Rings of Power and what viewers can expect from the series. The article includes a more detailed breakdown of the original characters the show will be introducing, who weren’t featured in the original Tolkien texts. These characters are specifically the people of color who have been included in this show’s vision of Middle-earth, including the first elf of color and the first female dwarf. The show is making an effort to more accurately reflect the world, reminding viewers that, in the words of executive producer Lindsey Weber, “Tolkien is for everyone.”

Included among the characters joining Middle-earth are an unnamed harfoot elder played by British-Jamaican actor Lenny Henry and the dwarven princess Disa, played by Sophia Nomvete. She is the first Black woman to play a dwarf, and the first female dwarf to be featured in a Lord of the Rings project. In addition to these characters, the piece also provided a glimpse at a storyline between silvan elf Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) and human healer Bronwyn (Nazanin Boniadi). The two will be entangled in a forbidden relationship in one of the show’s many intertwined storylines.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is slowly letting out details in dribs and drabs, but any other information is still being tightly held under lock and key. This security is intense, to the point that the LotR character posters only displayed the hands and torsos. However, armed with these new character details, viewers can be prepared for some major revelations come Super Bowl Sunday.
