In theory, Love Island is all about love. Except it’s really not. The entertainment value of the show lies with the drama that comes from the many relationships, friendships, fights, and breakups that occur over the course of each season’s run.

When so many attractive adults are crammed into a small space for months at a time, the occasional explosion is inevitable. Combined with the show’s endless string of challenges and relationship tests, the result is a recipe for utter chaos. It’s equal parts horrifying, hilarious and addictive.

10 Season 2 – Terry And Malin Fight Over A Toastie

Season 2 of Love Island featured some of the most dysfunctional couples the show has ever seen. Terry and Malin might just take the crown though. Already on edge after Malin criticized his outfit, Terry lashed out when she started cutting up his proudly-prepared cheese toastie and accused her of ruining his meal.

He later stormed off to complain to the other guys in the villa about the incident. The entire situation makes zero sense – but then again, neither do half the arguments in a relationship once it’s on the rocks, to which plenty of viewers can relate.

9 Season 3 – Theo Steals Tyla From Jonny

Most of Love Island‘s drama takes place around the firepit, where Islanders get to choose who they recouple with and who they’d like to dump from the villa. In season 3, Theo committed the cardinal sin of stealing another Islander’s partner, coupling up with Tyla before Jonny could.

The reaction is just as civilized as you’d expect. Not only did Jonny call him a “gigantic bellend” but Theo reared back with the ultimate insult of “tuna melt.” Even though the pair had to be separated, there was absolutely zero credible threat in this confrontation. It’s just pure melodrama.

8 Season 5 – Amy And Curtis Discuss Casa Amor

At the beginning of Amy and Curtis’ relationship, it seemed like everything was going swimmingly. Then Casa Amor happened. While away from his near girlfriend, Curtis realized he actually wasn’t content with their relationship. The only issue was that Amy wasn’t around to know this.

What remained was telling her when he returned. This was awkward enough until Amy makes the revelation mid-confrontation that she was coming back to tell him she loved him. It’s potentially the most quotable Love Island argument of all time but is also one of the most upsetting considering the very real emotions involved on Amy’s side.

7 Season 4 – Rosie Accuses Adam Of Talking Behind Her Back

Rosie and Adam’s clash is more comparable to a live performance than an argument. Having previously pressed pause on life in the villa to gather her fellow Islanders to watch her confront Adam, Rosie went for round two by summoning him across the garden to call him out for flirting with new girl Zara, despite the two being coupled up.

It was very one-sided, with Adam mostly smirking his way through the entire discussion and suggesting that it was Rosie’s jealousy that pushed him to flirt with Zara in the first place. It’s a cathartic moment for Rosie, who needed to get her anger out after being repeatedly mistreated by Adam during their time in the villa.

6 Season 4 – Ellie Questions Georgia’s Loyalty

Viewers heard “I’m loyal, babe” more times than they could count in season 4 of Love Island. This was Georgia’s catchphrase – and one fellow contestant Ellie had trouble believing.

For context, there was a totally separate spat involving Georgia and Laura’s current partner, Jack (who Georgia kissed). In light of this, Ellie took issue with Georgia’s repeated claims of loyalty. The issue soon escalated out of hand with the pair screaming in the kitchen and several boys getting between them. The fallout didn’t last long, but it was tension that was a long-time brewing between a pair who couldn’t have been more different.

5 Season 2 – Kady Gets Jealous Of Scott’s Date

Kady and Scott definitely weren’t one of the healthiest couples in Love Island and had some pretty serious ups and downs. This might have been the biggest ‘down.’ When new girl Tina took Scott out for a date, Kady was trapped in the Hideaway and did not respond well to the idea of someone taking her man.

So, she did the obvious thing as she called Tina the rudest word imaginable and flashed her through the glass. The other Islanders’ embarrassment is easy to see – including Scott’s – making this one of the hardest Love Island moments to watch without secondhand cringe.

4 Season 7 – Faye Against The World

Oh, Faye. The season 7 contestant had a habit of acting out before she thought things through. Once she got going, nobody could stand in her way.

When a villa movie night showed her surprising scenes of her partner Teddy in Casa Amor, Faye exploded. Not only did she scream and swear at Teddy (who remained perfectly calm) in front of the entire villa, but she went off on Jake for his actions in the villa. Islanders were horrified – and so were viewers, if the record number of Ofcom complaints reported by the Radio Times are anything to go by.

3 Season 5 – Maura Calls Out Tom

The clash between Maura and Tom was one that viewers never saw coming. After being picked for a night in the Hideaway, everything was going swimmingly until Tom made an off-the-cuff remark to the other boys that it would be “let’s see if she’s all mouth” (in a less-than-subtle reference to Maura’s open positivity about sex).

Fortunately, Maura was there to overhear his comment – and, bafflingly, Tom repeated it when asked. Initially shocked, she soon lashed out and backed out of plans for their night alone, leading to a drawn-out confrontation across the entire villa. The other Islanders looked as awed as viewers felt. Ultimately, it became one of many memorable moments that made Maura a Love Island icon.

2 Season 2 – Kady Spills Her Drink On Malia

Former makeup artist Kady was at the center of plenty of bust-ups during her time in the villa, but her most explosive moment also happens to be the only time security has visibly had to get involved on screen.

When new bombshell Malia returned from a date with Kady’s partner Scott, Kady and the other girls sat down to chat with a glass of wine – only for Kady to ‘accidentally’ spill hers on Malia’s leg. The newcomer physically lashed out at Kady in response, with the guys in the villa running over to help (and Zara, bless her, throwing herself between the pair). Malia was swiftly removed from the villa, but her legacy as Love Island‘s most chaotic contestant lives on to this day.

1 Season 5 — Anna Confronts Jordan About Liking India

Just two days (“two days!”) after asking Anna to be his girlfriend, Jordan pushed her over the edge when he – for some reason – decided to pursue India. Despite Anna being sat just across the garden, and despite India being coupled up with Ovie, he sat India down to tell her that he liked her.

Luckily for Anna, he’d also told Curtis of his plans. Curtis told Maura, Maura told Anna, and chaos ensued. It’s the kind of confrontation that even gives the viewer an adrenaline rush. Jordan’s actions are beyond frustrating, and watching him try to wriggle his way out of it is infuriating. This is a television trainwreck at its finest, especially when the girls begin to rally around Anna. A Love Island classic.
