Jonathan Majors shares his reaction to the abrupt cancellation of Lovecraft Country. The HBO supernatural horror series is based on Matt Ruff’s book of the same name, taking place in the 1950s following Majors’ character Atticus Freeman embarking on a journey to search for his father with help from his uncle and his friend Leti. Created by Misha Green and executive produced by Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams, the series also stars Jurnee Smollett, Michael Kenneth Williams, Aunjanue Ellis, Wunmi Mosaku, and Jamie Chung.

The show’s first season premiered to rave reviews and audience support, combining its supernatural and science-fiction elements with illustrating social perspective on racism and terror during the Jim Crow era of the 1950s segregated America. A second season was in development titled Lovecraft Country: Supremacy, and Green had detailed storylines for what was to come that would have expanded past the novel. In what came as a shock to fans, HBO did not renew Lovecraft Country for a second season was officially canceled in July.

In an interview with IndieWire, Majors reveals his disappointment over the cancellation of Lovecraft Country after one season. Majors reminisced about his experience on the show, expressing sadness with the cancellation but joy over what they accomplished. Majors’ full comment can be read below:

“We are a family. I had a text from Courtney [B. Vance] this morning, and Jurnee and I talk damn near every day. We’re very happy, but there is a bit of a ennui, a bit of sadness, because we’re done. We did it and we did it well, I believe. And it’s over with now, so it’s really jarring.”

Majors is coming off of an Emmy nomination for the show, which has garnered 18 nominations, including ones for Smollett, Kenneth Williams, Ellis. While unexpected events from Lovecraft Country’s season 1 finale may have made Atticus Freeman’s future in the series a mystery, Majors was expected to play a prominent role in season 2. While it has been disclosed that the cancellation amounted to an amicable decision between Green and HBO, it is very disheartening for fans and for the creatives on the series who expected a renewal, especially since the finale left many situations unresolved. Its awards buzz and critical reception prove that it was one of the top original shows of the year and that its quality was unparalleled and clearly had massive potential to continue.

While Majors’ disappointment is certainly validated, he has many projects lined up for him, as he is currently filming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, where he stars as Kang the Conqueror, and is in talks to star opposite Michael B. Jordan in Creed 3. It’s heartening that Majors stays in contact with his Lovecraft Country co-stars after the cancellation, and the show’s Emmy nominations should help the other actors find work as well. Even though the show turned out to be short-lived, fans have plenty to look forward to when it comes to Majors and his co-stars.
