Fans developed a soft spot for the king of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) in the hit show Lucifer. Fans rallied behind the series to get it renewed for a fifth season and fans can’t wait. Just because Lucifer is the Devil, doesn’t mean he isn’t devoid of emotions and sadness. Along four-seasons of the show, Lucifer has gone through some tough times.

Between dealing with the anger towards his father, running a successful nightclub, and understanding love, he has his hands full. Fans have watched Lucifer deal with celestial beings, his family, life, and death situations. Lucifer has had his breakdown moments that left fans in heartache. Let’s take a look at Lucifer’s heartbreaking moments that made even the Devil shed a tear.

10 Letting Go Of His Mother

The Goddess or Lucifer’s mother has caused many deaths and troubles while on Earth. One of Lucifer’s saddest moments is when he realizes what he must do. His mother wants to use Azrael’s sword to seek revenge but Lucifer knows it will only work against them and humanity.

His only solution is to let go of his mother, even if it meant never seeing her again. He showed her the same mercy she did when God banished him from heaven. The Goddess knows it is the only way and calls Lucifer her angel. This is a heart-jerking moment for Lucifer as no one refers to him as an angel, only the Devil.

9 Lucifer Losing His Friend

In episode nine of season one, Lucifer creates an unlikely friendship with a preacher, Father Frank. Father Frank didn’t always live a life of servitude and Lucifer starts to sympathize with him. They develop a close bond. That comes to an end when Father Frank is killed.

To make things more emotional, Father Frank’s last words to Lucifer were, “your father has a plan for you.” As if saying that he knew all along who Lucifer really was and accepted him regardless. In the aftermath, Lucifer yells at his father in anger. Father Frank followed God’s rules and did everything by the book and still received an undeserved death to which Lucifer yells, “What’s the bloody point?!”

8 The Death Of Uriel

The common lore about the Devil isn’t necessarily true when regarding Lucifer. Fans come to see that Lucifer still cares for his family and his siblings despite them not helping in his banishment. He still harbors certain disgruntled feelings. Lucifer is shocked to see his younger brother Uriel appear on Earth.

Uriel reveals his plan to use Azrael’s blade to kill their mother. One of Lucifer’s saddest moment occurs when he is forced to kill his own brother. He collapses into his mother’s arms distraught.

7 Discovers Chloe Was God’s Plan

Throughout Lucifer’s journey, he has become entangled with Detective Chloe Decker. He doesn’t fully understand why her and why she has a strong effect on him. In season two, he comes to somewhat accept her role in his life until it all crumbles. His mother decides to tell Lucifer the truth about Chloe’s purpose.

Chloe was put in Lucifer’s path by God. Lucifer has a flashback of all the moments he shared with Chloe. He becomes angered and feels betrayed thinking none of it was real. It was another trick played on him.

6 When Lucifer Speaks To God After Being Shot

At the end of season one, Lucifer is fatally shot. Due to Chloe being in the vicinity, he doesn’t heal. Lucifer feels oncoming death and calls out to his father, God. This is a saddening moment for Lucifer as he lays in a pool of his blood and asks for his father’s help.

Despite his anger towards his father’s abandonment, Lucifer asks for him to protect and save Chloe. Lucifer is willing to give up his life and his need to defy his father for Chloe. He even promises to be the son his father always wanted. This is a sad moment for Lucifer as he is in one of his most vulnerable states.

5 Shows Linda His Real Face

It takes a lot for Lucifer to show his true form. Since his banishment, Lucifer has come to detest what he really looks like. It’s a reminder of the fate he was forced to live. He developed a friendship with Linda but she refuses to believe him as the real Devil. He decides to show her his true face.

This was a gut-punching moment of sadness for Lucifer. It takes a lot for Lucifer to show his true self and his true emotions. He often hides behind jokes and bravado. Linda becomes mortified by Lucifer’s true face and goes into a state of unmoving shock. Lucifer realizes his mistake and her unacceptance and leaves.

4 Chloe Rejects Lucifer

At the beginning of the fourth season, Lucifer suffers a heartbreak worse than his banishment from heaven. Chloe can’t grasp who Lucifer really is and admits to being terrified.

She can’t fathom the Devil being real and much less it being someone she cares for. She tells Lucifer all she can think about are the good and bad stories told of him. She is conflicted between him said to be the embodiment of evil and her feelings for him. Lucifer shows his face and asks if she can accept him the way he is and she responds, “I don’t know.” Fans could hear Lucifer’s heart shatter and crumble.

3 I Want Her To Choose Me

Lucifer is on the edge of heartbreak. He is distraught over the idea that everything is in God’s favor and that he can’t show Chloe his wings. Linda gives him a reality check and tells him that Lucifer still has free will to choose what he wants.

He says with emotion, “I want her to choose me.” This moment is one of his saddest because he feels as if he can never truly have Chloe’s love unless he tells her the truth and she accepts him. It all shatters when he sees Pierce proposes to Chloe. Once again Lucifer fails to have love.

2 His Encounter With God Johnson

Lucifer meets his father in human form and it makes for an emotional roller coaster. Lucifer lets loose his real feelings as to why he hates his father. His father feels regret and can’t remember why he was mad, to begin with. Lucifer becomes emotional when God tells him he is proud of Lucifer and who he has become.

It all means nothing when it’s revealed that Johnson was never really his father. He was simply possed by a celestial object. Lucifer is, even more, angered knowing his father would never apologize for rejecting him.

1 Letting Go Of Chloe

It seems as though Lucifer can never catch a break. They finally won one battle but there is a war coming. Chloe finally accepts Lucifer and sees the angel in him. Lucifer knows he can’t accept her love. This is truly the saddest moment for Lucifer as he realizes he must commit the most selfless act.

He must let go of Chloe and return to the one place he despises the most, Hell. This is the only way to keep her safe, his nephew safe and humanity safe from evil. Just as Lucifer got a glimpse of a hopeful future, it’s ripped away.
