Netflix’s Lucifer is based around the devil giving up his role as the ruler of Hell in favor of solving crimes in Los Angeles. Throughout the series’ run, Lucifer Morningstar and Chloe Decker have gone on a number of adventures involving these criminal cases with the help of characters like Daniel Espinoza, Amenadiel, and Ella Lopez.

All in all, there are some cases that remain noteworthy for featuring a good blend of the characters’ dynamics, the creativity involved, and how engaging the story was. Other times, cases just weren’t up to the mark and played second fiddle to the main plotline.

10 Worst: Lucifer’s Prank On Daniel

While the episode itself is a hilarious watch, the case in question isn’t even a legitimate one, as Lucifer planned it all out as an elaborate prank on Daniel. As it happened, Dan was made to believe he had to transport a prisoner, only to watch everyone from the Russian mob, his old friend, and even his former improv group die before him.

Just when it seemed it was all over and Dan was the only survivor, Lucifer revealed he’d hired everyone to come up with this false case. Everyone got a good laugh, but the fact that the case was fabricated from the start makes it a weak one overall.

9 Best: Lucifer Solving Lee Garner’s Death

The most major way Lucifer changed over the years was his willingness to do more than serve his own desires. While ruling in Heaven, he decided to help Lee Garner solve his death, using his experiences around Chloe to guide him.

Lucifer and Lee then partnered up to figure out that a man called Dirty Doug was behind Lee’s killing due to the latter owing Doug money, with Lucifer then sending a message from Hell to Chloe on Earth. It was a simple case but one that showed how Lucifer had learned the skills of a detective to solve crimes on his own.

8 Worst: Family Drama Over Amusement Parks

This case was clearly shoehorned to fit the plot, with Lucifer and Chloe investigating the death of a member of a family that owned amusement parks. It was meant to reflect Lucifer’s own conflicts with his brother Michael and his father, as the case acted as a parallel to Lucifer’s issues.

It was altogether far too simplistic, with the reveal that the victim’s girlfriend had accidentally killed him after he’d decided to get past his family issues. The best thing about the case was the naming of the park being a pun, titled “Hole in Juan,” apart from which the only other thing was the bickering of the suspected siblings.

7 Best: Cain & Lucifer Going Undercover

In this case, a murdered woman turns out to be a drug dealer with a false identity, prompting Chloe to convince Lucifer and Cain to pose as a couple and infiltrate the suburbs to track down the woman’s killer and who’s behind the drug operation.

It provides a lot of potential for fun and comedy, as Lucifer absolutely loves unsettling Cain by embracing his identity as Cain’s husband. The case itself is unique as it turns out the killing was done by an angered wife who had assumed her husband was cheating on her with the criminal, making it all a comedy of errors.

6 Worst: The Poison Pudding Case

Going a bit too cheesy on this one, Lucifer featured a case where the crime revolved around figuring out the killer of a chemist in a pudding company. While the reveal that the man had taken his own life to show that the pudding’s ingredients could be poisonous was creative, the lead-up to it was unspectacular.

The majority of the investigations revolved around pudding-related puns and jokes, while Chloe and Lucifer weren’t at the top of their game due to a relative lack of interest on their part and focus mainly being on Charlotte. In the end, the case became an afterthought when Charlotte tried to gain vengeance on the owner of the pudding company out of her own guilt.

5 Best: Lucifer & Chloe’s Investigations On Nuns

A good way to set up Amenadiel’s eventual interest in becoming a cop was through this case, where Chloe took his assistance in her investigation of a nun’s murder. The best part about it was their pairing that saw Chloe act as a guide for Amenadiel as they zeroed in on the suspect.

It was also a good use of throwing in red herrings, with many nuns and Mother Superior seeming like the suspects until a surprising reveal showed none of them were guilty. Of course, the case was also a humorous one due to all the nuns becoming extremely attracted to Amenadiel’s angelic magnetism.

4 Worst: The Killing Of Ty Huntley’s Hook-Up

This took place right at the start of the series when Chloe and Lucifer kept coming across each other and partnered up unofficially. Here, Lucifer became friends with Ty, a virgin star player whom he influenced into hooking up with someone, only for the girl to turn up dead.

The case was fine for a beginning season episode but seems far too novice now that there have been many cases with more depth. It was revealed that the victim’s killing was planned in order to blackmail Ty, which was also a relatively shallow motive to be taken too seriously.

3 Best: Lucifer, Daniel & Amenadiel’s Undercover Case

With Chloe out having girls’ night with Linda, Ella, and Maze, she left Dan in charge of taking Lucifer and Amenadiel to a club to find a killer who had murdered two women. It was a hilarious change from the norm, as Lucifer and Amenadiel’s antics proved too much for Dan to handle.

In addition, the case took viewers down a rabbit hole as the many leads formed a trail for the male trio to investigate, resulting in a number of quirky interrogations that highlighted each character’s difference in personality. The end reveal of the killer being a friend of the deceased was altogether out of nowhere, but a worthy surprise.

2 Worst: Reese Getty’s Investigation Of Lucifer

This case was from the point of view of the villain for the week, with Reese Getty taking on the reins. His investigations into who Lucifer is supposed to be were shown, as Getty tried to find proof of Lucifer being the devil, only to accidentally poison an innocent woman.

It would have worked had this been from the first season, but the case fell flat being shown in Season 3 when fans were used to Lucifer being the main character. There were no surprises in store either since the revelation that he’s the devil was known from the first episode itself.

1 Best: The Alternate Lucifer & Chloe’s Team-Up

In this alternate reality, the relationship between Lucifer and Chloe was validated when they teamed up in a scenario where Chloe was an actress instead of a cop. The two stumbled upon a case where she searched for her stuntman’s killer at Lucifer’s nightclub and their chemistry shined through once again.

The case had the twist of Chloe not taking on the role of the straight man due to having zero experience as a cop in this reality, which made her dynamic with Lucifer all the more interesting. The crime itself was solved relatively easily but was worth the story since Lucifer and Chloe were so inexperienced.
