Warning: SPOILERS for Lucifer season 5, part 1.

Luciferseason 5, part 1 ended on an epic cliffhanger and leaves behind some huge questions the second half of the season needs to answer. The supernatural Netflix series broke up its 16-episode season 5 into two 8-episode blocks, with the release date of the latter chunk of episodes still to be decided. However, there was plenty of drama, comedy, and devilish antics to be had in the first half of Lucifer season 5.

While the Devil was back ruling Hell, Lucifer’s identical twin brother Michael (both portrayed by Tom Ellis) arrived in LA with plans to wreck the life Lucifer left behind. But Michael’s ploy to pose as Lucifer didn’t last long; his ruse was quickly uncovered by Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German), and Lucifer soon returned to confront Michael and send his twin packing. But while Lucifer and Chloe resumed their partnership and romance, with all of the complications both entail, Michael switched gears and continued his plot to ruin the Devil. After Michael kidnapped Chloe, who Lucifer and his friends rescued, Michael and Lucifer, as well as Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) and Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt), came to blows at the LAPD. The destructive battle between the celestial beings was broken up by the sudden appearance of God (Dennis Haysbert).

God’s arrival is obviously a gigantic question mark for the rest of the season, but there’s lots more happening with the rest of Lucifer‘s supporting cast like Maze, Ella Lopez (Aimee Garcia), and Dr. Linda Martin (Rachael Harris) as well. With Lucifer season 6 greenlit by Netflix as the final season of the series, the answers to the lingering questions Lucifer season 5, part 2 must provide become even more important.

11. God Has Appeared, But Why Now?

God’s sudden appearance at the end of Lucifer season 5, episode 8, “Spoiler Alert” is a game-changer. The Almighty Father and his mysterious ways have been constantly mentioned since Lucifer began but season 5 dropped some interesting new developments: Before he came to Los Angeles to ruin Lucifer’s life, Michael had cozied up to God and became His advisor. God also told Amenadiel that Hell no longer needed a warden after Lucifer returned to LA. But why has God decided to take human form and come to Earth? One thing is for sure, God obviously has bigger plans than just breaking up the fight between his sons Lucifer, Michael, and Amenadiel, but what is God’s plan?

10. What Is Michael’s Real Plan Against Lucifer?

Michael has been a pure black hat villain and he’s hellbent on ruining Lucifer’s life on Earth, but what is his overall plan and endgame? So far, it seems like Michael has been making up his scheme as he goes along. When posing as Lucifer and seducing Chloe didn’t work, Michael retreated to the shadows and started manipulating the Devil’s friends: He coaxed Maze’s loyalty by promising her a soul, he’s trying to instill fear in Amenadiel by convincing him his baby Charlie is only a mortal, and Michael revealed that Lucifer is really the Devil to Dan Espinoza (Kevin Alejandro). But Michael hasn’t proven to be stronger or more clever than the Devil, so how does he expect to beat him in the end?

9. What Happened To Michael’s Right Shoulder And Wing?

When he stopped pretending to be Lucifer, Michael has an obvious physical handicap: his shoulder and right arm suffered some kind of injury. Then, when Michael revealed his angelic form to Dan, part of his right wing also looks like it has a similar injury. Yet Lucifer season 5, part 1 didn’t address what was wrong with Michael, nor did any other character call attention to it. Michael was still able to use his right arm and even fight with it, but the cause of the archangel’s physical malady remains a mystery that Lucifer season 5, part 2 will hopefully answer.

8. Will Lucifer Say “I Love You” To Chloe?

Lucifer season 5 has been an emotionally difficult one for Chloe. But what’s tormenting Detective Decker most of all is that she told Lucifer she loves him and, even after their relationship finally turned sexual, the Devil still hasn’t been able to say those three little words back. Lucifer did try to say “I love you” to the detective but as he struggled to find the words, time suddenly stopped, heralding the arrival of God. There may be deep-seated psychological or even supernatural reasons why Lucifer hasn’t been able to utter the words Chloe is dying to hear, but will the Devil finally be able to tell the detective that he loves her in Lucifer season 5, part 2?

7. Is There More To Why Chloe Was Created For Lucifer?

Even beyond Chloe wanting to know Lucifer loves her the way she loves him, she also has to reconcile the very reason for her existence. The detective now knows that she was “a gift” to Lucifer and she also found out Amenadiel was God’s chosen vessel to gift her parents the miracle of having a child. Understandably, Chloe continues to wrestle with that this revelation means for her life and whether her choices are all pre-destined.

But there may be even more to how and why Chloe was born and what her true purpose really is in relation to the Devil. God’s arrival on Earth may be a boon to Chloe but then again, the inevitable conversation the detective is bound to have with the Almighty may not glean the answers she’s hoping or – or there’ll be a further twist Chloe couldn’t have anticipated.

6. What Is The Darkness Inside Ella?

Poor Ella Lopez finally decided to take a chance and date a nice guy in Lucifer season 5, but he turned out to be a serial killer. Reporter Pete Daily (Alexander Koch) appeared to be an ideally nerdy match for Miss Lopez but she was heartbroken to discover that he is the killer of women who calls himself LilyMan85. Even worse, Pete told Ella that he sees “darkness” in her, which is part of what drew the psychopath to Miss Lopez.

Ella may come off eternally cheerful and she’s the nicest person in Lucifer, but Miss Lopez does have sharper edges. She comes from a rough family and she’s been touched by divinity, with Azrael the Angel of Death (Charlyne Yi) befriending her when she was a child and checking on her periodically. Miss Lopez is also the only one left of Lucifer’s close friends who still doesn’t know that he’s really the Devil. Will Ella finally find out and will that be what unleashes the darkness within the forensic scientist?

5. Will Maze Get A Soul?

Mazikeen is angrier than ever at Lucifer in season 5. She held a grudge because he left her behind in LA when the Devil returned to Hell and, now that he’s back, Maze still resents him because he kept the secret of where her mother, Lilith (Lesley-Ann Brandt), was all along. Maze has serious abandonment issues, especially after Eve (Inbar Lavi) also left her behind, and then Lilith rejected her before she died. The demon-turned-bounty hunter has now thrown her lot in with Michael, who promised her a soul. But can a demon actually gain a soul and, if Maze does get one, will that mean she will be a person who people won’t keep abandoning?

4. Will Linda Reveal Herself To Her Daughter?

In Lucifer season 5, Dr. Linda Martin has been obsessively raising Charlie, but when she counseled Maze over her abandonment issues, Linda revealed the dark secret she has kept for decades that she fears she will go to Hell for: She got pregnant and gave her baby up for adoption in 1994. Trying to be helpful, Maze tracked Linda’s now-adult daughter down and found she is Adrianna Nassar (Alexandra Grossi), a local real estate agent.

Maze tricked Linda into meeting Adriana under the guise of buying a house, but Dr. Martin didn’t let on that she was the agent’s birth mother. Linda said it has to be Adriana’s choice if she wants to find her birth mother, but will there actually be a reunion between them in Lucifer season 5, part 2?

3. Is Amenadiel’s Baby Charlie Really Mortal?

Between Linda and Amenadiel, their baby Charlie has been extraordinarily well-cared for. Linda has been ensuring that Charlie has every type of education he will need for his presumed greater destiny as the first hybrid angel-human while Amenadiel has taken protecting Charlie to greater lengths. But when Michael gave Charlie a cold, it planted a seed of doubt in Amenadiel that Charlie is actually mortal, which means he can’t live in the Silver City. But is Charlie really mortal or is Michael merely lying to mess with his brother? And what does it mean for Charlie’s future if he really isn’t a celestial being?

2. What Will Happen To Hell Without A Warden?

When Lucifer returned to Hell at the end of season 4, what seemed like months back on Earth was actually thousands of years in Hell time. But when Lucifer went back to LA, briefly leaving Amenadiel in charge to look after the demons and the damned, God spoke to Amenadiel and told him Hell no longer needs a warden. But what does this mean? Does Lucifer never need to return? Is he still the Lord of Hell? And what happens to the demons; do they just get to look after themselves? Uncertainty aside, God’s decision about Hell could have major implications for the rest of Lucifer.

1. When Will Lucifer Season 5, Part 2 Release on Netflix?

After the way Lucifer season 5, part 1 ended, it’s understandable if fans can’t wait for the second half of the season to drop on Netflix. However, it’s not clear when the rest of the episodes will air – whether it’s later in 2020 or, more likely, sometime in 2021. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic stuck before Lucifer was able to complete production on the season 5 finale episode. When it’s safe for Lucifer to begin shooting again, the end of season 5 will still have to be wrapped up so production can begin on Lucifer season 6. Until then, all Lucifer‘s fans can do is wait.
