Lucifer season 5 continued to follow the upbringing of Charlie, Linda and Amenadiel’s half-human, half-angel child, and suggested he might have angel powers. Lucifer season 5, part 1 begins with Ella visiting Linda, who is rather overbearing when it comes to Charlie, filling his days with advanced education for his age like Japanese lessons and yoga. Linda tells Ella that Charlie is special, and Ella replies “all parents think their child is special.” As the season goes on, both Linda and Amenadiel tell the other characters that they think Charlie is special, and it becomes a running joke as each character gives the same response. However, as Charlie is half-angel, this may very well be true.

Since almost all of the characters shrugged off the fact that Charlie could have special abilities, it will be that much better when it turns out to be the truth. Although Charlie has not exhibited any powers yet, that doesn’t mean he won’t in the future (and hopefully next season). Earlier in the series, Remiel sensed celestial energy coming from Linda when she was pregnant, and Charlie’s parents now both have a sense that there is more than meets the eye. This indicates that his storyline will become more complex, and that the show has only scratched the surface on what it means to be half-angel.

Season 5 gives further clues about Charlie’s fate, which show that he has angelic powers on the way. This information, combined with what has already been revealed about the way that Heaven and Hell work in this universe, create a potential twist regarding Charlie’s role in Lucifer season 5, part 2. Here are the clues that reveal Charlie’s abilities, and his future in the show.

Charlie’s Reaction To Lucifer’s Devil Face

Like any mortal newborn, Charlie spends much of his time crying. Amenadiel tries to comfort him, but has no luck. Dan has a shot at it and almost succeeds, but Charlie can’t be soothed for long. It is only when Lucifer loses his cool and reveals his devil face that Charlie stops crying. More importantly, he laughs at his devil face and doesn’t show the slightest bit of fear. This could mean two things.

The first is that Charlie recognizes his own kind, and perhaps seeing Lucifer’s true form appealed to the angelic form inside of Charlie. If Amenadiel revealed his wings, maybe Charlie would have stopped crying then as well. Secondly, it could mean that Charlie has a specific connection to Hell; Lucifer is an angel after all, but it is his devilish side that brings Charlie the most joy. This is the largest clue that Charlie has hidden angelic abilities, since he could recognize them in Lucifer even before he could speak. No ordinary baby could have been calmed by Lucifer’s gruesome devil face.

Charlie Is The First Known Human-Angel Hybrid

Over the course of Lucifer, demons and angels have mingled with humans, but there has never been a half-angel hybrid until now. It is uncertain territory for Charlie’s parents and the other immortals. This makes Linda’s frantic teaching in the first episode of season 5 seem more significant than a joke. Charlie may age more quickly than a typical human, since all angels were born as adults. It does not seem out of the realm of possibility that he is picking up on what Linda is teaching him, and the results of this may be revealed in season 5, part 2. At the end season 5, part 1, Charlie gets a cold, which terrifies Amenadiel. This raises the question, is Charlie immortal? Since Charlie’s human side is subject to human weakness, it makes sense that he can get sick and for him to be strong but not immortal. Charlie also freezes when Amenadiel stops time, which does not typically happen to angels. Again, since Charlie is half-angel, he may not have all of the benefits of a full angel. However, this does not confirm that he was born without powers.

As previous seasons revealed, both angels and demons in Lucifer can sense Charlie, and wanted him in Heaven and Hell respectively. If Charlie had no angelic abilities, it is unlikely that he could be traced. His positive response to Lucifer also shows that he has a celestial connection. If he displays abilities in the future, perhaps they will be similar to the demi-god Hercules in Greek mythology, who had greater skill and strength than any human, the ability to go to Heaven or Hell, and the ability to die.

Lucifer’s “Is Charlie Human” Plot Sets Up A Season 6 Twist

Based on Charlie’s behavior so far, and the suggestion that his angelic abilities will be fully revealed in season 6 (or the season 5, part 2 finale), Charlie could end up being the key to bringing balance on Heaven, Hell, and Earth. Perhaps there will be a time jump, where a teenage or adult Charlie can be seen exercising his angelic powers to help defeat Michael (and even send him to Hell to be the new king). Charlie’s response to Lucifer’s devil face could be both literal and symbolic – that he laughs in the face of the devil, because he is powerful enough to go to Hell and back. Although it is possible that Amenadiel’s wings would have had the same effect on him, that is never discussed and likely on purpose.

Charlie’s mortal side would allow him to relate better to humans than any other immortal walking the Earth. At the same time, he would have angelic powers and the ability to go to Heaven. He could be connected to all three realms, and possibly have a direct line to God. In Lucifer season 5, part 1, God conveyed to Amenadiel that Hell is fine without a leader. However, God’s motives in this show have always been murky, and it is possible that Hell is only fine for now. Charlie could change that, especially with Michael being the force of evil this season. Much of season 5 builds anticipation about who Charlie will become, so the second half of it and then the final season will no doubt explore this in depth.

Based on what Lucifer season 5 has revealed so far, Charlie is likely to come into his own by the time of season 6 and reveal his abilities. However, there are a number of other possibilities. It may be that Charlie is actually powerless, or that Michael is tricking Amenadiel into believing that Charlie is mortal. Whether Charlie is immortal or not, there is no doubt that he will be a key player in revealing God’s master plan in Lucifer.
