Lucy Liu has been cast in the next limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s supernatural thriller and horror novel, Later. The third installment written for Hard Case Crime follows a literacy agency owner named Tia who is struggling to raise her son Jamie as a single mother plagued with financial problems. After discovering her son’s supernatural ability to serve as a medium for the dead, the mother and her police detective girlfriend use his newfound ability to their advantage at a gruesome cost.

According to Deadline, Liu is set to star in Blumhouse’s adaptation of the 2021 novel Later by King. The metaphorical story about progressing through your demons has been acquired by Blumhouse, with the pilot script written by series creator Raelle Tucker. Known for her work on HBO’s True Blood and Netflix’s Jessica Jones, Tucker shares her enthusiasm for working with the production company and adapting one of her favorite writers, alongside working with Liu, calling it a “dream come true.” Read Tucker’s quote below:

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Later is terrifying and touching and wonderfully weird — of course it is, it’s Stephen King. Adapting one of my favorite writers of all time, with an incredible partner like Blumhouse and the incomparable Lucy Liu, is a dream come true.”

Despite not being the King’s first on-screen adaptation with Blumhouse, the television production company is also simultaneously working to produce one of King’s stories from his collection of four novellas If It Bleeds for Netflix’s Mr. Harrigan’s Phone. Although the details of Liu’s role in Later have not been specified, this will be Liu’s return to television, following her last appearances on Paramount +’s Why Women Kill and CBS’s Elementary in 2019. Liu is also set to star in the highly anticipated sequel to 2019’s Shazam! as the villainous Kalypso in Shazam! Fury of the Gods
