Boom! Studios’ hit comic series Lumberjanes is getting an animated movie, followed by a TV show, that will be released on HBO Max. Launching in 2014, Lumberjanes is a creation of Boom! Studios editor Shannon Watters, writer Grace Ellis, and artists Noelle Stevenson and Brooke A. Allen. The comic follows five teenage girl campers who discover that Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types is a hub for supernatural forces that they must defeat.

With such a fun premise and Lumberjanes‘ comics becoming quite popular, it didn’t take long for discussions of a movie adaptation to begin. 20th Century Studios began developing a live-action film based on Lumberjanes in 2015. The studio hired Emily Carmichael to direct the film the following year, but then it fell apart. Disney’s acquisition of Fox resulted in several movies in development not moving forward, which allowed Lumberjanes‘ creators to search for a new place to call home.

It has now been revealed that a Lumberjanes animated special and subsequent TV show are in development at HBO Max. The news came from Children’s Media Association, where Noelle Stevenson is set to take part in a panel titled, The Making of LGBTQ+ Children’s Media. The bio for her revealed that she and the Lumberjanes team recently sold the rights to HBO Max. Further details shared by THR revealed that HBO Max won an aggressive bidding war for the IP, beating out Apple TV+ and Peacock, and that the Lumberjanes content will be animated, not live-action.

The recent development for Lumberjanes marks the next step in Stevenson’s career. She is going to write, direct, and executive produce the special movie and several episodes of the show. Stevenson already has experience in animation too, as she created and showran She-Ra and the Princess of Power on Netflix. The series boasts great animation and several LGBTQ characters. The latter will once again be part of Stevenson’s work as a result of the LGBTQ relations at the heart of Lumberjanes story, and it should be expected that the animation will be excellent.

Even though Lumberjanes isn’t the biggest comic title globally, it is still quite popular and is a smart pick up for HBO Max. With the streaming wars only growing more competitive and important by the day, the addition of a female-focused, LGBTQ supernatural animated series could be a hit for the streamer. It’s even possible that the performance of Harley Quinn further incentivized HBO Max to aggressively move to add Lumberjanes to its upcoming slate of original content.
