Before joining Married at First Sight, Steve Moy lost his job in software and sales, and he has been freelancing ever since. Noi Phommasak was still deciding how she felt about Steve’s job situation. At first, it seemed like he wasn’t working at all. Steve arrived energized for MAFS after a long road trip, where he was sleeping in his car and seeing where the day took him.

Steve is far from the only person laid off in the years since the COVID-19 pandemic started. He’s also not the only one who has taken advantage of the time to do some soul searching. While Noi tried to make it seem like she wasn’t all that concerned about his work situation, her face told a different story. At the same time, she felt reassured by Steve’s personality. Noi was also more than happy with Steve’s humor and dark, handsome features. His ability to take time off in the first place appeared to show that he had his financials in order.

Even Steve’s parents wondered how Noi felt about his job. His dad said, “Steven, he’s like a vagabond. He really just wants to travel. What do you think?” Noi reiterated that it was a little concerning, but this wasn’t a disaster for her. Noi, after all, has an alter ego, Noisy, who likes to have a good time. When it came time for Steve to sit down with Noi’s family, they too had some questions about whether he would be able to provide a stable income for Noi and potential kids in the future. Steve assured them that while he was not working in a full-time role at the time, he was freelancing. This was the first time viewers heard anything about Steve’s part-time work. MAFS fans were puzzled by Steve’s job status initially.

Noi’s younger brother Michael came dressed as his drag persona, Sriracha, ready to bring the spice. When Noi’s family asked if he was looking for something more stable outside of freelancing, Steve said that with the craziness of the show and his travel ambitions, freelancing made sense at the moment. Until this point, the show made it out like Steve wasn’t working. While freelance work may not provide health benefits and consistent income, one could feel a little misled in thinking he doesn’t work at all. On the contrary, Steve’s confidence in his decision makes it seem like he knows exactly what he’s doing.

Despite his work status, Noi from MAFS was also still confident that they could go all the way. When Siracha drilled down and questioned how he would provide for future kids, Steve answered, “you know different people have different expectations for what they want out of life.” Noi’s mom said that if she was going to get those grandchildren, Steve would need to get a job.

The belief that Steve isn’t working at all is a misconception. He is still working and previously saved enough to allow for a more flexible lifestyle. Millions of Americans work in the part-time gig economy, or in other types of freelance roles. Thankfully, programs like Obamacare and private marketplace insurance exist as an alternative to employment-provided healthcare. Steve probably has ambitions to return to full-time work eventually, but at nearly forty years old, his decision to embrace a freelancing lifestyle is far from the most radical move heard of on Married at First Sight.

Married at First Sight airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EST on Bravo.
