Apple TV+ reveals the first Swan Song trailer starring Mahershala Ali as a man facing a terminal illness who is cloned for his family. Ali stars as Cameron, a loving husband to the pregnant Poppy and father who is diagnosed with a terminal illness, but offered an alternative solution by his doctor to prevent them from grief by cloning himself, struggling to figure whether he wants that for his family. Alongside Ali, Swan Song features an ensemble cast that includes Naomie Harris, Glenn Close, Awkwafina and Adam Beach.

Development on Swan Song was first announced in early 2020 when Apple TV+ acquired the rights to the project from Oscar-winning writer/director Benjamin Cleary, marking his feature directorial debut, and with Ali attached to star and produce. Casting would start ramping up later in the year as Harris signed on in September 2020 followed by Close and Awkwafina in November. Production on Swan Song would begin that same month and with it having wrapped in February this year, viewers are getting their first look at the sci-fi drama.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

With just over a month until the film’s premiere, Apple TV+ has debuted the first Swan Song trailer. The video sees Ali’s dying character as he must make the impossible decision whether to leave his family behind with his clone or leave them without him. Check out the moving trailer below:

The first Swan Song trailer certainly points to a promising feature debut for Cleary, bringing the same sense of layered drama and unique concepts to a very real story, while also offering just enough grand visuals to indicate its sci-fi connections. The video also shows the film presenting a number of difficult questions for audiences to answer, much in the same vein of similar genre hit Black Mirror, albeit through a more dramatic lens rather than thriller or horror as so often seen in the Netflix series. Additionally, the film’s star-studded cast look to be firing on all cylinders in the film, lending to the potential of major awards attention for them.

Swan Song comes at a time in which Apple TV+ continues to build up its film roster with a range of new titles, from the Tom Hanks-led fellow sci-fi drama Finch to the latest adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth from Joel Coen. It also comes as the streaming platform’s titles are finding themselves eyed for Oscar and Golden Globe statues, with last year’s Wolfwalkers having been nominated for Best Animated Feature at both events and this year’s CODA already striking up major Oscar buzz from its festival rounds and summer premiere. Only time will tell if Swan Song can join the acclaimed list of awards hopefuls when it premieres on Apple TV+ on December 17.
