The first major expansion set for Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, Price of Power, is set to release at the start of next month. This will be the first-ever expansion set to be added to the game and Once Upon A Pyre, the first card set, will release simultaneously across all platforms with full support.

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is built on the popularity of the card game Gwent from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and The Witcher novels. In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, players can collect Gwent cards and challenge NPCs to matches all across the map. There were even some quests and competitions in the game revolving around the card game. Gwent was such a popular aspect of the action-adventure fantasy epic title that CD Projekt Red ended up developing Gwent: The Witcher Card Game as a separate free-to-play digital collectible game for fans to enjoy. While the gameplay is not exactly the same as in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, it is more complex and fully featured, with new factions and mechanics. The original Gwent is still there underneath, just with a larger pool of cards and dedicated graphics.

Price of Power will consist of three-story related expansions for Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, focusing on the theme of magic and how the different factions go about securing victory. The first of the three expansions, Once Upon A Pyre, will introduce 26 new cards to the game, including 4 cards of different rarities per faction and 2 neutrals. According to the press release on the official Gwent website, along with new cards, all-new abilities and gameplay mechanics will be added to the game. This should create all new and powerful synergies to existing decks and bring new life into the game.

When Once Upon A Pyre releases, there will be a special, limited-time offer Expansion Pass which will grant access to all of the Price of Power expansion premium cards. As each of the three expansions are added to the game, players with the expansion set will be able to pick from a selection of cards. Along with unlocking cards, the Expansion Pass comes with an animated Pyre coin, which will unlock immediately after purchasing the pack.

This expansion marks the first major release for the 2018 game. Depending on how well this expansion and the sales behind the Expansion Pass go, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game fans may be in store for more of these events in the future. There is no information on when the other two sets in Price of Power will be released.
