A Star Wars video game based on The Mandalorian has been at the top of many wish lists since the show’s debut in 2019, and a potential spinoff title would do well to focus on Moff Gideon before the events of the series. Giancarlo Esposito recently expressed an interest in returning as Moff Gideon in a Star Wars game, which could be a great opportunity to explore more of the mysterious Imperial officer’s backstory. Esposito himself is no stranger to video games, having starred in Far Cry 6 as the game’s main villain, Antón Castillo.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Empire was defeated at the Battle of Jakku a year after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, so the fact that Gideon is active during The Mandalorian – which is set five years after Jakku – shows that he’s one of the Empire’s most devoted and fanatical servants. The first whispers spoken about him relate to his efforts in the siege of the Star Wars planet Mandalore, playing a pivotal role in the scattering and destruction of Din’s planet and people. Gideon won the Darksaber during his stay on Mandalore, along with the respect and fear of the universe at large. Even after the Empire’s fall, he remains ever loyal and seeks to continue their policies and traditions in whatever capacity he can manage.

A Star Wars: The Mandalorian video game has the potential to chronicle Moff Gideon’s rise to his legendary status by centering the game around the Mandalorian Civil War and the role Gideon played in it. The warrior people of the planet were already on shaky ground with the Republic, and as the Empire’s much more forceful boot came upon the proud tribes they rebelled, resulting in a siege more harrowing than most battles taking place in the war that had just ended. Lucasfilm hasn’t yet revealed when the Mandalorian Purge took place in the canon Star Wars timeline, but this could be further explored in a new game.

Mandalorian Game Could Show Moff Gideon’s War On Mandalore

Mandalorians make great video game protagonists, and expanding the lore of The Mandalorian TV series through this way could put the spotlight on a new Mando hero. It could also show Gideon as the same, no-nonsense yet smug master of intimidation, or perhaps the siege hardened the heart of somebody at least marginally less cruel and exacting and players see that growth throughout the game. The finale could be none other than Bo-Katan’s encounter with Moff Gideon, where she loses the Darksaber to him and flees her home planet. Star Wars canon possesses many grand and cinematic battles, but the dark fate of the planet Mandalore sets a fantastic backdrop for Moff Gideon’s rise.

There are multiple new Star Wars games currently in development, but it’s unclear if any of them will throw the spotlight on the Mandalorians or even connect to The Mandalorian TV series. While the new Star Wars canon is more connected than ever, recent games have had a tendency to spotlight new characters and adventures unconnected to the main Skywalker Saga, as was the case with Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. This doesn’t mean that a Mandalorian game is outside the realms of possibility, however, and with Giancarlo Esposito clearly willing to portray Moff Gideon in a Star Wars title, there is hope that it could one day happen.
