Nintendo’s Mario has been given the meme treatment by being described as a “Florida man”.  “Florida Man” is a term that started on a Twitter account that gave real news article headlines of odd events involving men from Florida. The weird incidents have made the meme popular and have helped make Floridians seem like a bizarre, yet endearing group of people. Now Mario has been described in a similar fashion.

The fictional plumber has been synonymous with Nintendo since his debut in 1981’s Donkey Kong. In this platform game, Mario rescues Princess Pauline instead of the now famous Princess Peach. The hero reappeared in the Super Mario video game series with his brother Luigi, fighting Koopa Troopas to eventually reach Bowser’s stronghold and save Princess Peach. Along the way, the brothers in Super Mario gain various power-ups from items like mushrooms. These mushrooms affect Mario’s abilities and size, essentially changing his reality. While Mario’s lore makes for a great game, it also surprisingly makes for a great Florida Man meme.

On the gaming subreddit, user Informal-Information asked other users to describe their favorite video game as a Florida man article, referencing the Florida Man meme. Informal-Information posed their own description of their favorite video game, obviously referring to Mario: “Florida man kills turtles, tries to kidnap woman while high on shrooms.” Attached to the post is a picture of a GTA character dressed as Mario walking on a boardwalk hosting a graffiti-filled amusement park.

This description seems scarily accurate. When Mario jumps on Koopa Troopas, they hide in their shells and he uses them as projectiles. One can assume that when this happens, these turtle-like creatures perish. Furthermore, there have been some questions over whether Princess Peach actually wants to be rescued. At the end of Super Mario Odyssey, Peach rejects both Bowser’s and Mario’s marriage proposals and walks aboard a ship without them. Though she does eventually call out for Mario to go with her, this scene has left fans wondering how Peach truly feels about Mario. The joke about Mario’s mushroom power-ups has been around for years. The fan theory goes that Mario uses magic mushrooms to change both himself and how he perceives the world around him. Magic mushrooms do exist in real life, but they are illegal in most parts of the world.

Mario remains an iconic character. Nintendo will surely continue churning out games staring the beloved Italian plumber and now even a movie. With the upcoming Nintendo Super Mario film with Chris Pratt, Mario fans are looking forward to the character’s lore expanding.
