Nintendo’s Mario Golf: Super Rush is a new era in Mushroom Kingdom fashion. Mario himself, the legendary Nintendo character, sheds his iconic hat and overalls to don a visor, polo shirt, and khakis fit for the links. And, of course, Mario’s twin brother Luigi copies his every move.

Those two are the superstars of the Mushroom Kingdom, but their country club attire is a little lacking. Good deeds can only get one so far, and their uninspired golfing outfits aren’t going to turn any heads on the circuit. Peach and Daisy similarly did the bare minimum, exchanging their gowns for skirts and polos. Admittedly, dressing for the occasion and not beyond is understandable for royalty.

On the other hand, some Mario Golf characters just tried too hard and ended up with something not necessarily bad, but not good either. Bowser, for instance, is trying really hard to make sure people remember he’s a villain. Everyone already knows this, of course, making the flame-print visor and trademark spiked bracelets tacky accessories. Other Mario Golf: Super Rush characters apparently saw the opportunity to make a fashion statement while hitting the course, while some missed the mark entirely.

Best Super Rush Outfits – Wario

Wario’s diamond patterned pants could’ve done all the work on this fit alone, but the cowboy hat makes this an iconic look. The matching diamonds on the hat’s band is a subtle detail that ties it all together, but the off-color, flashy shoes really help Wario stand out from the other golfers.

Best Super Rush Outfits – Waluigi

Waluigi’s not here to play a game, he’s here on business trying to prove he deserves to be in more Nintendo games. The vest and striped shirt, all the way down to the classic golfing shoes, is working, and the matching purple fedora might have been too much if he hadn’t included the pièce de résistance – a rose fitted to one side.

Best Super Rush Outfits – Bowser Jr.

Bowser Jr. must have seen his dad’s nearly botched attempt at dressing himself, and decided to go with something more subtle. Bowser Jr. is on a roll following his co-op appearance in Bowser’s Fury, because he’s brought the best visor to Super Rush.

It doesn’t pop as much as Wario’s hat, but the Junior Clown Car face across the front of the visor is a nice touch that accelerates him past the humdrum of Mario and Luigi’s similar outfits.

Best Super Rush Outfits – Rosalina

Normally depicted in her floor-length gown, Rosalina took the opportunity to wear something more trendy and breathable. This Mario Golf outfit is simple, yet elegant, while her star-shaped brooch remains as a crest on her dress. A terrestrial game such as golf must be a trifle to Rosalina, as evidenced by her wand, which she uses to swing her clubs. Rosalina is also undoubtedly the course marshal’s favorite player with the way she floats above the green.

Best Super Rush Outfits – Toad

Toad knows he’s an icon – proven by the absolute gall required to even attempt an outfit that includes a sweater vest, bowtie, and pom-pom-topped golf hat. Yet, he pulls it off perfectly. It’s no wonder Nintendo disallowed unique toads in other games, because there’s none that can even come close to standing up to the original with the way he shows up to the golf course.

Worst Super Rush Outfits – Dishonorable Mentions

Bowser was very close to qualifying for this category, but at least he tried. Some participants in Super Rush didn’t even get dressed for the occasion, which is an absolute embarrassment. Yoshi, Boo, Donkey Kong, and King Bob-bomb should be disallowed from Mario Golf’s competition for not adhering to the dress code.

Worst Super Rush Outfits – Chargin’ Chuck

It’s hard to fathom the ineptitude required to wear the attire of a completely different sport to a golf course, yet Chargin’ Chuck somehow managed it. Chargin’ Chuck better have impeccable chipping technique, because there’s no way the course marshal will allow him on the green wearing football cleats. This is an unfortunate result for Chargin’ Chuck’s debut as a playable character.

It was a nice touch by developer Camelot to give unique outfits to some of Super Rush‘s playable characters, but the four without are especially noticeable. Previous Mario Golf games offered alternate colors, which would have been a nice option for characters like Yoshi, though something like a hat or even just a shirt would have been a welcome change to Yoshi’s usual look. Cosmetics are an increasingly important part of modern games, and some of the more notable outfits in Mario Golf: Super Rush are sure to influence players’ choices.
