Charles Martinet, the voice behind Nintendo’s Mario, has just opened up about some of his favorite games in the Super Mario series. While Martinet has lent his voice behind plenty of video game characters like the ancient dragon Paarthurnax in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, it is his long run as Nintendo’s iconic plumber (along with several of his supporting cast members like Luigi and Wario) that has earned him a place in gaming history.

Charles Martinet first voiced Mario in the seldom-remembered PC educational title Mario Teaches Typing in 1992 but gained mainstream attention when Mario crossed over into the realm of 3D in the now-classic Super Mario 64. Since then, Martinet has lent his signature high-pitched laugh to virtually every Mario game, including spin-offs like Mario Party, Super Smash Bros, and Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games. Even though he won’t be voicing Mario in the upcoming animated Super Mario Bros. movie (that honor will instead go to Guardians Of The Galaxy star Chris Pratt), Martinet has stated that he isn’t planning to hang up Mario’s iconic red hat anytime soon – revealing that he plans to continue voicing Mario for as long as he’s physically able to.

Naturally, Charles Martinet has his favorite recording sessions among the countless Super Mario games he has acted in, and he recently sat down with Retro Gamer to discuss them. While he says that he loves all of the Mario games he’s in, to some degree, there are a few particular titles that stand out. The first is Mario Teaches Typing, which he enjoyed because Mario always remains positive even when the player types something incorrectly – something that Martinet says that he suggested while recording for the game. His second favorite is Mario 64 since it was his first time voicing Mario in a proper platforming game and it allowed him to come up with how Mario would interact with the world around him. Some of Martinet’s other standouts include Super Mario Galaxy due to “the thrill of flying” across the various planets and Super Mario Odyssey for feeling “like a tribute to the past and the future” of the Super Mario franchise.

Charles Martinet’s most recent appearance as Mario came in October’s Mario Superstars on the Nintendo Switch, which continued the Mario Party series’s tradition of pitting Mario and his friends against each other in a wide assortment of colorful minigames. While Nintendo has yet to announce a new mainline Mario game, players can enjoy some of Martinet’s work in past games through Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pack, which recently added the original Paper Mario back in December.

Charles Martinet’s performance as the voice of Mario is legendary among players, and it’s always interesting to hear what he has to say about the role that inspired generations of fans. Some of his favorite Super Mario games are more recent titles like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Odyssey, but it seems that Martinet will always have a spot in his heart for the adventures that started his long and illustrious career as Nintendo’s favorite plumber.
