Marisa Tomei Says Her Family Doesn’t Give A Sh-t She’s In Spider-Man

Actress Marisa Tomei, who plays Peter Parker’s Aunt May in the MCU, says her family doesn’t “give a sh*t” that she’s in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Tomei is an Oscar-winning actress who first appeared as May Parker in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. May has always been an adoptive mother to Peter following the death of his parents when she and his Uncle Ben took him in. However, the MCU took a different approach by already having Ben Parker out of the picture before Spider-Man joined the franchise. With Uncle Ben’s death featured heavily in 2002’s Spider-Man and 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel chose to forego retreading the territory.

Spider-Man: No Way Home will be Tomei’s fifth appearance as May in the MCU. Aside from the trilogy of Spider-Man films she has been part of, she was also one of the many characters featured in Avengers: Endgame. With the MCU being a box office powerhouse and the immense hype surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tomei is part of the biggest superhero films of all time, though it would seem that it doesn’t impress her family much.

While speaking with BackstageOL recently, Tomei was asked whether or not her family is impressed with her involvement in a massive franchise like Spider-Man. Tomei was quick to respond with, “I don’t think anyone gives a sh*t except for like my nephew who’s like six.” Tomei made herself laugh over the comment before she added, “I mean, honestly, I don’t think anyone’s too impressed with me.”

While Tomei seemed to have fun with the question, it’s likely her family is simply used to her fame, given she’s been acting since the 1980s. Tomei has also been nominated for three Best Supporting Actress Oscars for The Wrestler, In the Bedroom, and My Cousin Vinny, the film for which she won. With her lengthy resume, Tomei has had decades in which her family could’ve easily acclimated to her success, meaning they’re likely proud, just not as shocked by it as they once were.

Tomei’s next appearance as Aunt May will be in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is generating significant buzz with a projected $200 million box office opening. Even if the role doesn’t impress her family, Tomei’s May could very well be an emotional linchpin in the film. Many currently theorize that May could meet her demise in No Way Home, giving weight to the action while possibly spurring Peter into battle against the numerous villains that have already been seen in the film’s trailer. Therefore, even if Tomei’s family doesn’t care all that much, millions of fans worldwide indeed will, given that May is such an essential character in Peter’s life. Spider-Man: No Way Home has been keeping a tight lid on most details, though numerous theories have been put forth. Audiences will finally know the truth of it all when Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters on December 17th.
