Mark Wahlberg is in talks to take over Chris Evans’ role in the upcoming film Infinite. News of Evans’ involvement broke back in February, and Paramount then teased the film at CinemaCon via a sizzle reel for their 2020 releases. At the time, Infinite was merely shown on a list of upcoming movies, which explains why a casting change was still possible.

Infinite is based on the novel The Reincarnationist Papers by D. Eric Maikranz and will be directed by Antoine Fuqua, who is best known for his films Training Day, Olympus Has Fallen, and The Magnificent Seven. Ian Shorr, who co-wrote 2008’s Splinter, is writing the adaptation. The book is about a man named Evan Michaels who experiences memories of past lives. He finds similar individuals in the Cognomin, an organization whose members have used their skills to change history.

According to The Wrap, Evans reportedly had to drop out of Infinite after a scheduling conflict with Defending Jacob, his upcoming series for Apple TV. Though a deal hasn’t been officially set, Wahlberg is in talks to take over his role as the film’s lead character. Infinite will be released August 7, 2020 and is set to begin production this fall.

Many have been watching Evans as he chooses his first projects post-MCU. After playing the same character for so many years, it may take a while for viewers to see him as anyone other than Captain America. Most of his new projects have action components, so they’re not too far off from the work he was doing while playing an Avenger. Though the thriller elements of Infinite would have made it an interesting project for him, it’s a smart move for Wahlberg as well. He’s made a career out of appearing in a multitude of genres, and this will only further diversify the projects he’s offered in the future.
