Marriage counselor Pastor Calvin Roberson has become a staple of Married At First Sight, but viewers want to know more about the reality star’s life when he’s not solving other cast members’ problems. Pastor Cal has been criticized for struggling to pair compatible couples in the unconventional dating series, but fans can rest assured that the expert is qualified for this high-profile gig. From his background in creating long-lasting relationships to his personal life outside of counseling, here’s everything there is to know about Married At First Sight‘s Pastor Cal.

Pastor Cal was born on July 7, 1961, in South Boston, Virginia. This means that Cal recently turned 60 and has a Cancer Sun sign. According to his LinkedIn page, Pastor Cal dedicated much of his young adult life to education. In 1979, Cal attended Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama. The prominent relationship expert graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Theological Studies and Music in 1983. Immediately after obtaining his degree, Cal continued working toward his goal to become a pastor when he went to Andrews University in Michigan, where he earned the title of Master of Divinity. Being the multi-faceted professional he is, Pastor Cal’s ambitions didn’t stop with religion. In 1990, Cal embarked on his legal endeavors when he got a law degree from Columbus, Ohio’s Capital University Law School.

Before he became one of Married At First Sight‘s figureheads during season 4 in 2016, Pastor Cal worked his way through a diverse career path that equipped him with a wide variety of expertise. In 1999, Cal was the regional Vice President of Allianz, a global investment firm. By 2005, however, Cal was putting his communication skills into motion when he worked as a speaker for Podium Perfect Counseling in Washington, D.C. In 2007, Pastor Cal dedicated himself to education when he took on a position at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts recruitment department. Cal started his transition to working on relationships when he published his critically acclaimed book, The Gospel of Non-Sense, in 2012. One year later, Cal founded Progression Church in Atlanta, Georgia. On top of serving as a senior administrator for the religious center, Cal is also the church’s lead pastor.

Fortunately for Pastor Cal, the Married At First Sight star hasn’t been on his impressive career journey on his own. In 2009, Cal got married to his wife and professional partner, Wendy Roberson. Together, Cal and Wendy run a counseling practice that caught the attention of the dating series. According to The List, Pastor Cal shared that Married At First Sight producers came to him and his wife “asking us to find them a couple who wanted on the show.” Cal explained that the couple he and Wendy referred to the show spoke so positively about his counseling skills that the casting team wanted to make Cal a regular cast member. When Cal isn’t solving newlyweds’ drama, he has his own life to tend to. Cal’s social media demonstrates that he and Wendy have kept busy traveling and promoting his new book, Marriage Ain’t For Punks, together.

After a discouraging season 13, Pastor Cal’s work on the series might be up for debate, but the reality star’s accomplishments outside of the series speak for themselves. From authoring two books to leading his own church with his wife, Cal is more than qualified to take on all of the romantic crises the unconventional dating show throws at him. Hopefully, Cal’s expertise will be more apparent in future Married At First Sight seasons.
