Derek Schwartz is remembered well for his especially tumultuous experience on Married At First Sight season 4, but here’s everything the alum has been up to since his hellish honeymoon. While most unsuccessful couples get divorced after Married At First Sight, Derek’s ill-fated marriage didn’t even make it to Decision Day. From his response to the shocking end of his reality television romance to his relationship with fans on social media, here’s what Derek’s been doing since season 4.

Derek was introduced to Married At First Sight fans during the season 4 premiere on July 26, 2016. The fourth season of the dating series featured couples from Miami. In 2016, Derek was 35 years old and working as an account executive. The relationship experts fatefully paired Derek with Heather Seidel, a 32-year-old flight attendant. Initially, it seemed like the experts had formed another well-matched pair based on Derek and Heather’s chemistry at the altar.

Once the newlyweds transitioned from the marriage ceremony to the honeymoon, however, the flaws in the relationship experts’ logic for pairing Derek and Heather took center stage. Fans have grown to doubt Married At First Sight‘s experts because of missteps like matching Derek and Heather. Once the couple started their honeymoon, Derek and Heather’s marriage began to rapidly decompose.

Derek’s Downer Honeymoon

One major issue between the newlyweds was Derek’s tendency to smoke. According to an In Touch article published back in 2016, Derek disclosed his “penchant for pot” to his wife. At first, Heather didn’t mind, but the flight attendant swiftly grew irritated by Derek’s incessant recreational use of the drug. In response, Derek developed resentment for Heather, who he deemed to be controlling and “nit-picky.” Their arguments often exploded and Derek even accused Heather of having a drinking problem. Ultimately, Derek wanted to see their marriage out for the 6 weeks they were intended to last. Regrettably, Heather knew they weren’t a good fit and promptly ended their union after only 10 days.

Derek Reflects On His Marriage

After season 4, Derek spoke about how disappointed he was in his disastrous experience on Married At First Sight. Derek spoke to The New York Post about what went down with Heather. He revealed that right before their last meeting with Pastor Cal, Heather was arguing with the show’s producers. Derek said Heather “basically threatened to leave the show.” Derek asserted he was genuinely upset about Heather’s decision to end their relationship. The account executive shared he did not continue to have any communication with Heather after their brief honeymoon. Derek explained he attempted to reach out to Heather on Twitter and Facebook before the season premiere but never got a response from his ex-wife. Although this experience was heartbreaking for Derek, he reaffirmed that he wasn’t ready to give up on love, stating, “I definitely look forward to it one day.”

Derek Moves On

Although Derek couldn’t reach Heather, he spent time with fellow Married At First Sight star Nick Pendergrast, among others, after filming the show. Many fans have felt for Derek since his journey on the dating show came to an end, but Derek shared that audiences’ sympathy isn’t necessary. Derek took to Facebook in 2019 to thank fans and let them know he’s doing alright. Derek wrote, “I have had way more amazing relationships and experiences that have come from that process than bad and am truly thankful for it.” While Heather went on to find a new partner and have a child, Derek doesn’t appear to have made much progress in the relationship department. On Instagram, Derek has 37,500 followers but only a handful of posts. Unfortunately, none of his posts give any information about Derek’s current relationship or career status. Although Derek’s current relationship status is a mystery, it’s safe to say that he won’t get married at first sight again.
