Although a handful of couples have found the spouses of their dreams in Married At First Sight, many fans don’t think the relationship experts behind the franchise’s arranged marriages have proven their worth. Viewers have expressed their frustration with the experimental dating series’ experts throughout the past seasons, but the past year has only strengthened critics’ claims that Dr. Pepper Schwartz, Pastor Cal Roberson, and Dr. Viviana Coles aren’t creating viable marriages. From pairing incompatible cast members to acting as spectators, here’s why Married At First Sight fans still think that the experts aren’t serving a productive purpose.

Regrettably, most of the marriages created in Married At First Sight don’t last much longer than a couple of months after the season concludes. Over the course of 13 seasons, there are currently only 12 couples that are still together. Season 13 turned out to be one of the most discouraging seasons in recent history as none of the five recently paired couples are still together. The latest season saw some of the lowest moments in the franchise as all of the newlyweds struggled to get on the same page. Fans think the relationship experts let down the season 13 cast by disregarding the hopeless romantics’ preference and not doing enough to improve the failing marriages.

For the past dozen seasons, viewers steadily lost faith in Married At First Sight‘s relationship experts, and unfortunately, season 13 solidified Dr. Pepper, Pastor Cal, and Dr. Viviana’s uselessness. First off, fans noted that many cast members were paired with people that have the opposite characteristics they were looking for in a partner. For example, Myrla asserted that she wanted a husband with a full head of hair that didn’t own pets. Once at the altar, however, Myrla found that her husband, Gil, was bald and would later discover that he has a dog. Additionally, Brett and Ryan couldn’t get along because of their contrasting political beliefs. Fans found it peculiar that the relationship experts dismissed Myrla’s request and overlooked Brett and Ryan’s differences. A Reddit user shared, “The experts seem mostly pointless… Any ‘matchmaking’ they do is mostly superficial and [anyone] could see the couples are doomed.”

Some Married At First Sight fans think that Dr. Pepper, Pastor Cal, and Dr. Viviana’s pairings are so ill-fitting, the relationship experts intentionally set cast members up with spouses they wouldn’t want. A fan explained, “I want a guy taller than me = she gets a guy smaller… They liked them to ruin a part of their life seems like the real reason.” This viewer pointed out that the relationship experts frequently cite liking the individuals they’re pairing, but their fondness for the brides and grooms never seems to work out in the newlyweds’ favor. Fans think that the experts have stopped serving a constructive role in the couples’ marriages as the dating series has progressed. A commenter asserted, “[The experts] are just hosts… It’s the shows writers and producers that do the work.” Viewers think the Lifetime network is more involved in cast members’ marriages than the experts.

For the past few years, the experts have been unpopular among the Married At First Sight fanbase, and their unconvincing performances in season 13 have cemented this common take. From failing to counsel struggling marriages to pairing incompatible spouses, viewers don’t think the experts are doing their duty in the dating series. Unfortunately, fans don’t believe Dr. Pepper, Pastor Cal, or Dr. Viviana have earned the title of expert in Married At First Sight.
