Johnny and Bao are the first Asian-American newlyweds to star on Married At First Sight, but the significance of their marriage doesn’t necessarily mean Johnny and Bao are meant to be. Over 13 seasons, the Married At First Sight relationship experts haven’t had the most solid track record, with many couples calling it quits on or shortly after Decision Day. From uninspiring comments Johnny made about his marriage to the pair’s awkward past encounter, here’s why fans are suspecting Johnny and Bao’s marriage won’t last.

Johnny and Bao star on Married At First Sight season 13, which premiered on July 21, 2021. This season of the experimental dating show features new couples living in Houston, Texas. Johnny is a 35-year-old IT project manager who was matched with Bao, a 35-year-old research administrative director. Johnny and Bao’s marriage has been highly anticipated, as they are opening the doors for more diverse cast members to star on Married At First Sight‘s future seasons. Unfortunately, the future of Johnny and Bao’s marriage looks bleak, as their personalities aren’t extremely compatible and they have expressed ambivalence for each other since their wedding day.

Although Johnny and Bao are on a reality series known for launching strangers into marriages, this pair of newlyweds weren’t strangers on their wedding day. One main reason why fans don’t think that Johnny and Bao’s marriage will stand the test of time is that they have fallen out in the past. The couple actually met in college, although they went to different universities. Bao explained, “Johnny was University of Texas Vietnamese Student Association President. I was the University of Houston’s Vietnamese Student Association President. And we did events together.” Bao shared that she and Johnny already have each other’s phone numbers saved and that she was ghosted by her now-husband in the past. This is one reason why fans think Bao and Johnny will get divorced after Married At First Sight.

Although the couple was able to joke about it on the show, Johnny’s previous dismissal of Bao hasn’t inspired fans to have much faith in their marriage. In addition to “Ghosting-Gate,” viewers don’t think Johnny and Bao will last based on comments Johnny made on Unfiltered (via Heavy). Johnny shared that one issue he and Bao need to overcome is their attraction. Johnny stated, “The kisses feel very platonic.” Johnny went as far as to compare kissing Bao to kissing his sister. While his remarks certainly concerned Married At First Sight fans, Johnny remains confident that his marriage will develop over time.

Johnny and Bao have their fair share of obstacles to overcome if they plan to have a successful marriage beyond Married At First Sight. From their unfortunate past that consisted of unrequited interest to their present inability to see each other as more than friends, this couple of newlyweds have many fans critical about their odds of staying together on Decision Day. Hopefully, Johnny and Bao can continue to grow on Married At First Sight and move on from the past ghosts that haunt them.
