Martian Manhunter Finally Claims The Justice League Role He’s Meant For

Over the years, the Martian Manhunter has held many roles in the Justice League, and now he has assumed the role within the team he was always meant for. In Justice League Infinity #7, on sale now in print and digital, the Martian Manhunter realizes his gifts are best served brokering peace on Apokolips, which has plunged into a civil war.

Justice League Infinity continues the story of the acclaimed Justice League Unlimited cartoon series, using the same continuity and character designs. In Justice League Unlimited’s final season, the Martian Manhunter left the League to walk among humans in order to better understand them. Six months after seemingly vanquishing Darkseid, the League then faces what they assume to be an invasion from Apokolips. In actuality, it is the opening salvo of a civil war between Kalibak and Granny Goodness, both looking to assert their control in Darkseid’s absence. No sooner are hordes of Apokolips sent packing. Then another, even bigger threat emerges: Amazo. Hearing a call from deep within the multiverse, Amazo takes off in search of it, just as the barriers between universes are breaking down. The Martian Manhunter returns to offer his services to the League, using his Martian telepathy to coordinate a team of heroes from across the multiverse—which leads him to his new role in the Justice League: peace maker! The issue is written by J.M. DeMatteis and James Tucker, with art by Ethen Beavers, colors by Nick Filardi and letters by DC Hopkins.

Amazo uses his powers to vanquish his dark self from another universe, which had been calling to him. After the dust settles, the League returns to the Watchtower to celebrate, and when asked if he will return to New Delhi, he replies he will, but asks Superman if he can return to the League on a more permanent basis—but not in his previous role as Mission Coordinator. Instead, he wishes to be an ambassador of sorts, seeking peaceful solutions to cosmic problems before they erupt into big problems. The Martian Manhunter uses the civil war on Apokolips as an example, and decides to make it his first stop, seeking to negotiate a treaty between Granny Goodness and Kalibak. Superman wishes him well.

The issue ends there, leaving readers wondering if the Martian Manhunter will be successful in bringing peace to Apokolips, but his new role as a cosmic mediator is the next logical step in his career. The Martian Manhunter was a founding member of the Justice League and has served in numerous roles during his tenure with the team, most recently as Mission Coordinator. He has seen a great degree of suffering and destruction, not just on his native Mars, but in the rest of the cosmos as well. By being more proactive, and seeking compromise instead of conflict, the Martian Manhunter is best positioned to make the Justice League’s name known and respected through the universe, and if he is successful in settling the civil war on Apokolips, he will have no doubt spared countless numbers heartache and misery.

As one of the Justice League’s founding members, the Martian Manhunter has held many roles within the organization, and now he is about to embark on his newest role: cosmic ambassador.
