The X-Men are one of the most famous teams in comic books, full of interconnected relationships, unexpected romances, and family dynamics. So it’s odd that one of their most well-known members, Wolverine, is a famous loner. Stranger still, Wolverine actually has a lot of friendships with characters in Marvel Comics.

It gets even more complicated when considered there are many versions of Wolverine, including Laura Kinney and from alternate universes in the comics. Throughout all of the multiverse, Wolverine is a caring person who takes a deep interest in others which has led him to some strange but rewarding friendships over the years.

10 Wolverine & Doop

One of the most unlikely X-Men friendships has to be Wolverine and Doop. Wolverine has teamed up with just about everybody in the Marvel Universe over the years, but Doop is a unique case. The mutant joined forces with the green alien blob to take down something called the Pink Mink.

The two got along pretty unexpectedly, but maybe not so much in retrospect. Wolverine is a man of few words and Doop speaks an alien language that is indecipherable. Their adventure was one of a kind weird but weird is something Logan is very familiar with.

9 X-23 & Jubilee

The relationship between the newest version of Wolverine, Laura Kinney, AKA X-23, and Jubilee played out much differently than it did with Logan. Logan acted as a big brother for Jubilee especially in the iconic 90s X-Men: The Animated Series. Laura and Jubilee were unlikely friends.

Jubilee is famously cheery and upbeat, while Laura, especially early on in her career as a superhero, was very dark and gloomy. She was uncertain about her identity and place in the world. Jubilee helped cheer her up and gave her a close friend her age that she could relate to.

8 Wolverine & Deadpool

It’s very hard to imagine Wolverine and Deadpool being friends. The two have often been adversaries, with Deadpool a mercenary and Wolverine one of the good guys. But sometimes their interests align. Wolverine recruited Deadpool for his version of the X-Force team.

he Merc With The Mouth talks a little too much for the generally stoic Wolverine, but the two have been at the very least cordial. That said, the peace is temporary with these two and their alliance ended with Deadpool left X-Force over moral issues about their missions.

7 Wolverine & Mystique

The X-Men villain Mystique is a character fans have become very familiar with over the years with her many appearances in X-Men movies and cartoons. She has little in common with Wolverine and the two have clashed repeatedly. But they have a unique friendship.

The two have been teammates on the X-Men, and lovers at one point. Logan likely sees himself in her, and her potential to be a force more for good than evil. But years of conflict and betrayals have muddied the waters between them.

6 Wolverine & She-Hulk

Wolverine and the Hulk, Bruce Banner, could never be considered friends. Logan debuted in The Incredible Hulk #180 in 1974 as an antagonist to the Hulk. It’s a different story with Logan and Jennifer Walters, the She-Hulk. The two have a fun rapport that shouldn’t work but does.

She-Hulk has been at times very wry and meta in the way that Deadpool has been, especially in her iconic run in Sensational She-Hulk in the late 80s. But her warmth and enthusiasm clicked with Wolverine and she even partnered with him in a patented fastball special which, like Fight Club, has its owns rules.

5 Wolverine & Elektra

Elektra is one of, if not the, most famous martial artists in Marvel Comics. So it’s not surprising Wolverine would be friends with her given his deep interest in the subject. But their friendship remains unlikely given the fact that she started off as an assassin.

The two first bonded after Wolverine had been stripped of all the adamantium in his body by Magneto in one of their most violent encounters. The trauma left Wolverine feral, but Elektra was able to help regain his lost humanity.

4 Ultimate Wolverine & Magneto

Wolverine often finds a lot in common with former villains, likely because of his own difficult journey out of the Weapon X program. One of the strangest friendships he has was in the Ultimate Marvel Universe of Earth-1610. Unlike Earth-616, Wolverine started out as a soldier for Magneto.

Logan’s worldview initially aligned much more closely with Magneto, who in the Ultimate Universe that launched in the early 2000s, is much more aggressive than his mainline counterpart. Magneto is capable of wholesome acts, but he committed some of his worst acts in the Ultimate Universe.

3 Wolverine & Black Widow

Another former villain turned hero Wolverine is friends with is Black Widow. Natasha Romanoff started off as a Soviet spy before reforming. Along the way, she met Wolverine. The strangest thing is that she actually met him as a young child, training to take part in the Black Widow program.

Wolverine actually trained her as a child, while he in turn was being trained in the art of espionage by her father, Taras Romanov. Natasha and Logan would go on to be the best at what they do, and they’ve often partnered on missions together.

2 X-23 & Gambit

Laura Kinney met the X-Ma Gambit at the same time that she met Jubilee. Gambit often has contentious relationships within the X-Men, given his slippery personality, but he became unlikely friends with X-23. Despite his past tendency to put himself first, Gambit became a great ally for Laura.

He accompanied her to the island of Madripoor as she sought the origins of the nightmares plaguing her sleep. He became a champion of sorts for her, encouraging her and supporting her in ways Wolverine never did and as he later admitted, never could.

1 X-23 & Squirrel Girl

Laura’s desire to be a family with Logan took her to lots of unlikely places. One of them was into the kooky world of Squirrel Girl. Like Jubilee, Squirrel Girl is young and very upbeat, and perhaps even more so. Nevertheless, she won over the glum Laura with her persistent spirit.

Laura is initially resistant to the charms of Doreen Green, but Doreen came bearing an actual wolverine as a gift, which ultimately softened Laura up a bit. Doreen also helps Laura accept her own clone, Gabby, and make sense of a very complicated but unique family.
