The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a tapestry of interconnected stories and personalities. Each hero has a unique flavor that’s accented by a musical theme, which has also helped to define their character too.

There are plenty of individual musical compositions throughout this franchise, but some definitely stand out compared to others. A great theme manages to sound heroic but can be used in a variety of ways. They are synonymous with the characters they represent and have been used continuously, building each time as the individual gets more and more complex. While there have been plenty of iconic pieces, many fans will agree that these composers and musicians are definitely talented artists and should be celebrated more by the MCU fans.

Doctor Strange

The corner of the Marvel Universe that Doctor Strange inhabits is absolutely wild. It’s whimsical, vast in its portrayal of the unknown, and completely mystical. The “Doctor Strange” main theme tune by Michael Giacchino had to bring all of that together and it does so in an incredible way.

It’s compartmentalized into various sections, as the seriousness of Strange’s former life as a Doctor is taken over by the magic he unleashes. It’s adventurous in a way that other themes aren’t and doesn’t feel like a traditional hero piece. Its use throughout Strange’s appearances, whether they are action-based or dialogue-driven, always indicates to the audience that something incredible is about to happen.

Iron Man

Iron Man has been largely defined by the music of AC/DC throughout his time in the MCU. While he’s had a few character themes in his various appearances, there is one theme by Brian Tyler that still sticks out (even though it was only largely used in Iron Man 3).

This is mainly because the character song that Stark was given was fast-paced and indicated his bravery. Its kinetic pace also represented just how quickly the inventor’s mind actually worked. If fans go back and listen to it, they’ll be able to feel the moment where his two identities and the inventor and Avenger merge together.

Thor

“Thor’s Theme” is one of the most regal and inspiring songs in the MCU. Whether it is because of the loud drums, the sharp violins, or the consistent trumpets, the fans are immediately filled with pride and inspiration – like there is a sense of royalty.

This might be because composer, Patrick Doyle, wanted his theme to reflect Thor’s background, his growing responsibilities, and his slow transformation in becoming one of the world’s strongest heroes/Avengers. If fans go back and listen to it, they’d agree it fits him perfectly.

Spider-Man

There are a lot of Spider-Man themes out there thanks to the various portrayals of the character. The one that maybe stands out most for general audiences is the original song associated with the TV serial. The MCU version of a theme therefore perfectly includes that initial number.

It’s youthful and fun, much like the character of Peter Parker, but there’s a grander element to this theme produced by Michael Giacchino which promises that Spidey will grow into one of Marvel’s most capable heroes. When compared to the other web-head themes it might be the standout.

Captain Marvel

Fans haven’t had the opportunity to hear Captain Marvel’s theme too much yet, considering the character has had very few appearances throughout the MCU. The song feels as if it’s all about finding an identity, searching for that big heroic crescendo as it builds.

There’s a cosmic vibe to the piece from Pinar Toprak, representing that link to the galaxy beyond that has come to define Carol Danvers. As it continues to evolve there’s a confidence to the theme that demonstrates the character’s leadership qualities. Captain Marvel’s music is sure to become a staple of this universe moving forward.

Black Panther

Black Panther is a son, a brother, a warrior, an Avenger, and most notably a King. As the leader of Wakanda, his music had to represent his heritage and culture. There’s a total edge to the piece, but his ability to defend the innocent as a hero is also brought into the sound.

The theme starts by replicating familiar hero themes but suddenly twists it into something far more original. This is not what the audience would usually expect from a character theme and yet it’s a beautiful medley from Ludwig Göransson that conveys the legacy of T’Challa’s ancestors.

Guardians Of The Galaxy

Tyler Bates made the interesting decision to start “The Guardians Of The Galaxy theme” with the Avengers music before it quickly morphs into something very different. The team is far less serious than the Earth’s mightiest and the fun of the theme signifies that.

There are once again cosmic sounds throughout the piece since the team spends most of their time out in space, but there’s also a link to the classic movie themes of pulpy sci-fi which Star-Lord would have grown up on. It’s huge in its scale but is perfect for when the team comes together.
