Rumors pin NetherRealm, the Mortal Kombat developer, as developing a new superhero-themed fighting game in the Marvel Universe. Though NetherRealm famously developed the Mortal Kombat games, it also built the Injustice IP, which had superheroes facing off in a terrifying alternative universe where Superman turns evil. The game and its sequel were a big success, and now Disney might be enlisting NetherRealm to create another smash hit.

Disney is notorious for squeezing every bit of use from its properties. Star Wars received a plethora of upcoming games and Marvel might be getting similar treatment. While Marvel-themed games haven’t done too well in recent years, like Marvel’s Avengers and Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite, Disney could be giving the franchise a fighting chance by commissioning NetherRealm, one of the best fighting game developers, to give it another go. The Avengers have endless potential when it comes to video games, and NetherRealm might be the best home for Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and many others.

According to Daniel Richtman, a past industry leaker with a mixed history of accuracy, NetherRealm Studios is currently working on a Marvel fighting game. Whether the game will take a similar shape to Injustice is currently unknown, as are any details involving the game’s development process. What is suggested, though, is that the game is supposedly being developed for next-gen consoles. Stealth Optional reported on the news, having accessed the information on Richtman’s Patreon page.

Though it would be strange that the Warner Bros-owned NetherRealm would develop a Marvel fighting game, it is likely the best home for a such title given the team’s history. While rumors also insist that NetherRealm is developing Injustice 3, the studio has been known to develop multiple games at a time, so both may be happening simultaneously. Injustice was an excellent franchise, with both games delivering superb action and an engaging story at the fraction of Mortal Kombat’s gore. A Marvel fighting game by NetherRealm would easily be superb as well, or at least better than the property’s last fighting game appearance.

NetherRealm should have spare time on its hands, considering Mortal Kombat 11 and its single-player DLC were supposedly the final entry in a new trilogy. Whether that time is being spent solely on Injustice 3, the Marvel fighting game, or a new IP is unknown. Disney will likely continue to spread Marvel throughout the gaming industry, and a fighting game is a safe bet.

Players can look forward to Hulk-smashing and web-slinging if the rumors are true, and can rest assured that NetherRealm is one of the best options for developing a premier fighting game. As for what incredible characters from the Marvel Universe will appear on the roster, players will have to wait and see.
